Decided I really needed a new gun and so did my wife to start the new year. I ordered a 6” S&W 617 .22 LR for me and a S&W Performance Center 442 .38 Spcl. for my wife. Can’t wait for them to arrive. My wife loved the feel of a regular 442 but after I let her play with loading my 610 with the moon clips she decided on the performance canter model which comes cut for clips and no internal lock! I might even need another one for myself! The 617 of course needs no introduction and will be a fun plinker and Squirrel chaser. Might need a 4X Leupold for it and will replace the safety with one that covers that damn hole

Off to a great start. Going to be tough to maintain this pace all year! The bad thing is my local pusher offers layaway and they have a Freedom Arms 97 .45 Colt sitting on the shelf that I don’t REALLY NEED.

Picked them up tonight but didn’t get to take any pics. Nice feeling trigger on the 617, might need to smooth up the .38 but we’ll see after some shooting

We all like Pre-Lock Smiths, 3-Screw Rugers, etc. But, this thing called reality eventually catches up. Ronnie is a friend and I'm going to support his new purchases just as most of us do for each other. Luckily, another member has a thumb latch that covers the safety hole. I support him too...

Thanks Huey! I am a big fan of “no lock” Smiths but since most of the new ones have them we are kinda stuck. They do have one advantage in that I don’t have to throw away a stupid small padlock and cable when I get home! Thanks to Huey’s reports on the Classics and turning me onto the new cylinder release that covers the hole I am very pleased. I have a couple more of the new S&W Classics on the target list so hopefully soon I can report on more

Over the last several years I have purchased a Model 19, Model 17, Model 586, Model 29 and Model 27. All are the Smith Classics, and to be honest I have been quite pleased with all of them. I haven't found anything to really complain about in any of them. I have started to modify one or two of them slightly, but not for quality reasons. They are all accurate and function properly (I haven't tried the infamous lock yet, so I can't speak to it's functionality at this time). I'm also considering picking up a 6" Model 57 Classic that is at a local gun shop.
