I grabbed my favorite ruger, which is a 44spl flat top bisley, and took a little walk down to a well that needed turned off. I absolutely love the feel of that gun in particular but much prefer the looks of a plow handle. While walking, it occurred to me that maybe the length of the grip rather than the shape has as much to do with the comfort for me. I have big paws and I have to ride my pinky under the grip of a plow handle. That has caused some natural skin grafts over the years from recoil. For those of you with extended grip frame mods like what JRH does, how do you feel the comfort compares to a bisley? Extending a grip frame is cake but there is only so much real estate on the straps to work with as far as changing the actual grip shape.

There's the Plow, the Super and the Bisley. You need to find a super and try it out. It is an extended plow.

They do make grips that extend the plowhandle, and a custom grip maker could make extended grips for a Super I would imagine. The only plowhandle I have left is a .41 and I have Texas Grips extended grips on it. I don’t like it as well as a Bisley grip but it’s ok.

TEXAS GRIPS makes extended grips for most Rugers.

I’ll extend the grip frame and make proper panels if needs be. I was inquiring more as to what people prefer on a MODIFIED plow handle vs the bisley. I’ll change the title.

I wish all guns had the Ruger Bisley or Colt Army Gripframes.
I do wish Ruger had an Aluminum Bisley Gripframe...

Ronnie is where I’d go. I believe they have a few longer models.
I have an upcoming project that I’m going to use an aluminum #5 frame on, looking forward to balance close to the old model aluminum grip frame with the comfort of the #5 frame…

I was inquiring more as to what people prefer on a MODIFIED plow handle vs the bisley. Sure a Hunter grip frame or a quick call to RW would get there. And I'm sure you already know the valuable addition of square bottomed grips in fitting of the pinkie. In the sprit of the question this is what I have found with plain ole XR3-RED. If left as is and extended by following the existing lines of the flair the bottom of the grip it gets HUGE. The grip will look like the great pyramid of Giza or worse yet, a Herter's grip. So you must remove as much of the flair as possible both front and rear. I have done a few like this and they do feel fine left at that. But you are limited by how much can be removed before exposing voids. At this point one could extend the bottom and get to a bigger grip. Then one could round the heel and get a weird Birdshead or Skull Crusher Hybrid grip.

If you go on Ronnie Well's site and check out his grip frame offerings you will see quite a variety of flavors for grip frame modifications. Now if you're all set up to make those mods yourself you can still see what has been tried successfully. I'm sure everyone would love to see pics, in process and project complete if possible. I'm working on adding TIG to my arsenal, but with the sour weather my progress is kinda on hold.

What I don’t want to do is add material to the existing straps to try and duplicate a bisley or some other shape( the potato judge is my FAV!). My mill is nice and capable, but it’s a manual machine without even DRO so any shaping would be a “one off” done by hand on a sander.

If you have the time you could use a torch to heat the straps and bend to a new contour, mill out a New bottom strap then weld together grind and polish. It wouldn't be a potato judge unless you started with a bisley though, if you can make a potato judge out of a plow handle you could make one quicker from scratch. You could hunt up a Ruger Bisley gf to make a SS PJ, Midway has steel, not SS for $139. Add in all the time and material and Ronnie's grip frame looks pretty reasonable to me. Plus I think the Brass is real pretty. I'd still be interested in pics of the process if you end up modifying your own.

I would likely pull the strap apart or at best have it paper thin to get there. Welding it up and milling or grinding it to shape would be the way, but as you say, a LOT of time invested. I’m mostly interested in something like the JRH mod vs the bisley.

Hey Hunter. If you have a tig, hell add a 1/2 inch to the bottom of the SBH Grip Frame. You can massage that mammy to your liking just like i did in the late seventies to a dragoon GF i had on a super 44. I have always had the pinky under syndrome. Hahaha. You know what your doing. And you obviously have the equipment. Give it a shot Man. Itl be fun.
YOU CAN DOOOOIT! R

This may seem counter-intuitive but the Bisley or 1860 is more comfortable but the plowhandle is easier to run fast. I attribute this to the pinky tucked under.
