Wanted to say Hello as I am new your forum. I've surfed literally through 100s of pages of this forum. Soooo much great info. And I can see you all are a pretty tight knit crew. I took a detour from revolvers for a decade or so, but have a new spark of 45 Colt passion. Myself, I've spent a few decades in uniform. Carry a gun daily. About ready to punch out. Lived in New Mexico for a good bit of time. Crossed paths with the Skelton dude a few times. Miss the desert a bit. A place a guy could really run a revolver. I've shot truckloads of jackrabbits in my travels. I've owned a Freedom Arms in my former life, hand delievered a Blackhawk to Gary Reeder for some work, only to sell it for 1/3 of what I had into it and for something I don't remember. Think I've had some Blackhawk Bisleys, some Blackhawks, a BRF for a short time, and a few others. Taken a handful of critters with a handgun. All of them on purpose. Mostly 10mm.
Seems I can never take the Easy button and do anything 44 Magnum. Been die-hard 45 LC for years. Had some TALO stuff over time and sold all my cool stuff for rifles. Recently moved back to eastern Washington from northern Idaho. Looking to relocate once more to central Idaho or central Montana....places a fella can tote and USE a 6-gun.
I am Jonesing to get back into the 45 Colt game. I've trolled GB every hour for a couple weeks now. I am floored at the prices of what were once pretty cheap guns. I didn't think finding a simple 7.5" Bisley in 45LC was gonna be that difficult. Sure there are a handful listed. I'll be trying to make a play for one of them over the next week I'd guess.
I have a handful of pretty simple questions. Is it OK if I just rip them off in a list rather that create 10 posts that will get people iritated quickly?

Thank you Couple easy ones: 1.Whitworth-still alive? I didn't realize who he was until I connected dots here. Read his posts for year on another forum. Seems super knowledgeable yet "modern" meaning not from central Idaho 2. Bowen Rough Country sights- I had one years ago. Really liked it. Site says Sold Out. I didn't see a Notify Me button. How does a guy get in line for one or two sights? To me...they were a Game Changer. My next guns kinda Have to Have them if at all possible. 3. Barrel pruning 'smiths- For my first trip "Back" to Revolver Land...I am kinda all over the place, but not really. My favorite barrel length is 6". I have plenty of plastic guns I carry for other purposes. To me...I am looking for Offensive, not Defensive. I want an all around, accurate revolver I could(will) take deer with. What's the quickest way to get a 45LC Bisley in 5.5" or 6" Buy a blued version and have it chopped I am guessing. Is there anyone who DOES NOT have a 5 year back log for more simple projects such as barrel chop? 4. Freedom Arms front sights- Reeder added a FA front sight base to my Blackhawk years ago. This a common install for others, or a Gary kinda specific thing? I get the vibe here that so many are Fermin sight fans. I've not seen or used one. I loved the interchangeablity factor in the FA base and ease of swapping blades. Fermin's bases need to be D&T after removing a factory base, Yes? Back to question 3 'smith services. 5. HS-6- I've never used it. I did buy some yesterday. I am primarily a rifle shooter. Shoot and compete on occassion in the LR steel game. I've really streamlined my powders. I generally only buy 3 anymore. For my 10mms I run AA#9. Easy to find. CFE Pistol in the Dillon for 9mm bulk. I have small portions of a bunch of powders.....2400 probably, H110 (always too much of a good thing for me) some Unique, TiteGroup, Longshot and Lil Gun. At 52 I turned into a Puzzy I guess. I really never warmed up to the monster loads. I still own a SRH in 480. I moved the FA83 years ago because although it was the finest work of metal I ever had....it was just too much of a good thing. Even running Half Throttle was probably 1250fps and still not too fun. In my research I see many medium loads in 45LC of 11ish grn under 250-270 cast. With some of the cast Keith style going 280-285....what is a safe max in a Ruger with HS-6? That would be enough for now. Hope these few do not upset anyone. Just easier to knock them out in bulk if you don't care. I am pretty excited to get back into the wheel gun thing. I have a pretty good array of steel and can shoot at home. I forogt how fun it is to tinker and tweak and run a cylinder or two through a gun between chores on the weekend. I am down to a Redhawk 45LC in 4.2" which goes for a walk on occassion, and a SRH in 480 that sits in a safe.

Believe I went through every page of "What did you shoot today". Soooo many beautiful rigs. Is that Idaho dude Dick still around?
The Turnbull TALO Bisley is possibly my Grail Gun. Anyone here have and shoot them?

Anyone here have and shoot them? The Talo bisley was a factory gun that had Turnbull finish. Mine was standard subpar action from the factory. Its pretty but has typical Ruger 45 issues.

Fermin Garza sells the Freedom Arms bases and inserts. You can have any smith install them. Reeder definitely not the only person doing that work.

The Turnbull TALO Bisley is possibly my Grail Gun. Anyone here have and shoot them? I have one and it is the finest “factory” Ruger I’ve ever owned. It is a worthy grail gun for sure. I made a few tweaks to mine to make it as close to perfect as I can imagine possible. Trigger job Crescent ejector rod Bowen target sight Power Custom free spin pawl Sixshot walnut grips Chamber mouths opened to .4525 Belt Mountain base pin I would hate to only have one, but this gun could easily be it if I had to. Your question on HS6… a great powder for the mid-range loads in 45 Colt. Longshot is another favorite of mine. Welcome aboard. Dan

About any powder you want to use is included on Loaddata.com. Well worth the annual fees.
Whitworth is still alive last I heard but unfortunately due to some personal stuff doesn't post much anywhere anymore. Sad what happened, but he's missed and I would love to see him return to the forum.
For a barrel chop and sight base, many talented local smiths are plenty capable. If there's not one in your area, I suggest you give Fink's a call. He operates out of the Gunsite gunsmith shop now so you'll see mostly semi's and DA revolvers on his site, but he is also a good single action guy. Bobby Tyler recommended him personally.
For the 45 Colt, I use Red Dot for Colt level loads; Universal or 4227 for mids; and H110, #9, or #11FS for hunting loads. My most shot loads use Universal under an NEI 310gr swc for 900fps from a 5-1/2" barrel Blackhawk.

Hello, and welcome to the best gun forum on the internet. I guess I'm the Dick guy you are referring to, although that doesn't sound right! There are some really great gun people here on the forum & all are more than willing to help as you probably know. Good friend & one of our top hand gun writers, John Taffin is in Boise, Brian Pearce is in Emmett although he doesn't come on any of the forums. A good buddy of mine, Mike Mendes is north of you in the panhandle.
Robb Barnes (Kings6) is west of you in Oregon & the list goes on & on. I'm down in the SE corner of the state, still trying to fight off most of Utah from coming up here & catching our fish, shooting our deer & elk & taking the good camping spots. Most of them work harder than we do. A good gunsmith is Bobby Tyler in Friona, Texas, that's Tyler Gun Works. Just remember, there are no good gunsmith's that are caught up......... Check with Fermin or Ronnie Wells for front & rear sights & grip frames, you won't be disappointed. Send me a PM if you want a phone number & we can talk, Dick

I'm afraid the Bowen rear sights are going to be unavailable. Good news is that Fermin Garza has an excellent (and much more affordable) rear sight upgrade.

There's the Idaho guy. Spent a week or so tooling around the Lone Pine, Mud Lake, Leadore area. Fell in love. Was pretty crispy in September there. Hard to believe the Valley is 6800 ft. Somewhere between there and Salmon is where I'd hope to plant my flag. Overall just an Idaho fan.
Was wondering where Brian Pearce kicked dirt most of his life. Thought he'd have been more remote than Emmett. Rolling through some of Elmer's haunts is pretty neat. I've actually been to Shoup. Giggled at one of his stories that was told about shooting glass insulators off the wires there.
I am aslo floored at the $$$$ some of you guys have wadded up in pistols. I make a great wage. And have a good handful of tools. But some of you have stacks of SPENDY pistols. I just can't Ball that hard! But I am envious.
No more Bowen rears EVER?
