I'm very limited on my offhand shooting anymore. The bungled back surgery 7-8 years ago numbed my right foot, like it doesn't exist, so a 100 yd offhand shot is out of the question for me at this stage of life. I would have to say it would only be in an emergency situation or not at all, I just can't hold the gun on a smallish target, it's like standing on one foot. My eyesight is good since the eye surgery, better than several years so no complaints or alibi's, but if you can't hold the sights on the target you had better find a rest or carry one with you, I do both. Ross Seyfried use to say that you should be able to hold 1" for every 10 yds, this is with an iron sighted six gun, he always thought a scope had no place on a revolver. World champions are like that......

Scoped my first handgun in the mid 80s, a 10 inch 357 TC Contender for NRA Hunters Pistol. Followed soon after that with a scoped 1911 45 ACP wadcutter gun with the scope mounted on the slide. Thought the crosshairs danced at 100 yards with the Contender until I scoped the 1911 for one handed, slow fire at 50 yards and timed and rapid at 25.. Best thing I got from shooting scopes and red dots was that after shooting the scoped guns, the iron sighted guns looked to be locked in a vise.

I measure my 100 yard offhand handgun accuracy with MOTBSOAB. Minute of the broadside of a barn.

For me as age my advanced, target groups expanded... along with my waistline :-) I wouldn't attempt a 100 yard shot with anything but my XP-100 in 7BR. First, because as of now it's my only handgun with a scope. Second none of my other handguns with iron sights are sighted in at long distances.

I then shoot at 100 to see how many clicks I need for 100 yards zero and I just raise that amount of clicks. Not hard to do.

Second none of my other handguns with iron sights are sighted in at long distances. Even something like a .44 caliber, 250 gr. SWC plodding long at ~950 fps isn't difficult to hit with at 100 yds. Sight 2" high at 50 yds., it's less than 6" low at 100 yds.

From competition in High Power Rifle and Handgun Silhouette, to brushing elbows with a few combat shooters, I never heard a sharpshooter on the Firing Line talk of wallet groups or delivering fist size groups on demand @ 100 yards. Or any other distance. Nobody, if they talked about their skill at all, talked about their skill in mathematic terms.
A saving grace of competition, performance is thoroughly witnessed. David Bradshaw
