Have any of you ever dealt with the gun and stock maker Steven Dodd Hughes? No doubting his talent and skill but curious about the personal interaction part.

My build did not materialize but we talked extensively via email and over the phone about a project I was considering. I told him it would be a while before I could do it and I was trying to figure out who to have do the work. He answered every question I had and gave me suggestions on what has worked for him in the past on similar projects. He also spoke highly of other builders and told me which ones could do the work for me should I decide to have someone else do it. This was several years ago and I would definitely consider him for the job if I do finally make the leap. He did say it would take a while to do with his back log. He also teaches at Trinidad College I believe.
It is funny this popped up. I just bought a Winchester Model 71 and that is the same gun we talked about. The plan was for fancy Walnut stocks with a ribbon checkering pattern, a red recoil pad, half octagon barrel in .348 Win, a button magazine with a slightly longer forend and finally welding up any non original holes and case hardening and bluing. I don’t have the rifle then but do now. Crap! Now you have me thinking.

I was curious. He had a couple of tools listed on another site and I posted I would take them and did the required follow up pm and received a rather different response back from him.
I was just wondering if he was one of those individuals who seem to be rather challenging to deal with all be it extremely talented at his craft.

Does he post often? Some people don’t understand the “I’ll take it” rule and seem to take offense at what they perceive as presumption on the part of the buyer.

We have corresponded a couple times later this morning at it is all good. Apparently Steven is retiring for the most part and is no longer offering classes. Interestingly Steven does make a few sets of handgun grips and actually had a set for sale in eBay which I was able to buy. He shared several pictures of grips he has made and he takes a second place to no one it looks like.

Dealt and bought several things from him. John Linebaugh stopped by and was impressed Covid beat Stephen up bad. I bought a Britte action from him. And he was more than helpful with contacting people to help me finish it.

He mentioned he had x couple of tough go arounds with Covid and he also mentioned that John had stopped by his place awhile ago. He sent me some pictures of Colt and S&W revolvers he has worked over and it shows that the gentleman knows his way around six guns as well as he does rifles, shotguns and muzzleloaders. I told him I know a number of folks who would be interested in grips by him if he wanted to keep playing with wood!

Thanks SBM, these are the grips Stephen Dodd Hughes made that I bought. He makes some beautiful grips based on pictures he shared with me.
