I'm getting back into Contenders after a few years pursuing other interests, and I'm looking at ordering a barrel from SSK Firearms. I remember SSK Industries when it was run by J.D. Jones, and those old SSK barrels wth their full vent-ribs and Mag-Na Porting fairly leapt off the pages of Taffin's books and magazine articles. Are the current SSK barrels up to the same standard?

No idea what the original quality was, as I've never owned one.
My best friend ordered an SSK Encore barrel a while back and he was very please with what he got - and he's picky.
Also noticed I could but a 357 Mag carbine barrel for a fair bit less from SSK than MGM, who now wants north of $500. No thanks, I'll shop around. My next one will be from SSK or EA Brown.

You can find slightly used ones on eBay and gunbroker all the time from JD ownership timeframe. What chambering are you looking for.

I have a older 6.5 JDJ it's awesome accurate. I have a 309 JDJ I bought from a friend but have never had time to try it out. I would love to have a 327 or 32 mag contender carbine barrel to plink around with.

I've had multiple barrels from JD (SSK) dating back to 1979 -- they all shot great. Recently, I have ordered two Encore barrels from SSK -- .44 Mag. and 360 Buckhammer. Both shoot great. I am unable to detect any difference between the performance of the older barrels and the newer ones. When I'm ready for another barrel -- Contender or Encore, I'll reach out to SSK. Just my 2 cents...

I have had barrels from EABCO, MGM and JD’s SSK barrels. I have also bought used factory T/C barrels and there are a lot more used barrels out there. I have not used the new SSK barrels but have seen good reviews from writers and people on forums. I look for used barrels when possible. I have a JDJ SSK barrel in .250 Savage and a T/C barrel in .375 JDJ that I bought from members off here. I know there are several members on here that have some interesting small caliber barrels. You have put a feeler out and you may get several responses. These people are nothing but enablers and are more than happy to assist people spending money on guns. A .327 Federal barrel would be pretty cool.
