Picked up a new Cimmaron Model P Pre-War in 45 Colt with 1-piece grips.
I’d like to find grips that fit in American Walnut instead of the wood the Italians used.
Any suggestions?

They are walnut. If you just want walnut, strip the factory grips and stain/refinish them. The folks on Colt forum swear that Fiebings dark brown is a close match for the color of the original 1st generation grips and to me, it's a dead ringer for the red varnish that Uberti uses. One of these guns has the factory finish, the other was stripped, stained with dark brown and finished with tung oil.  If I had it to do all over again, I'd use a walnut stain with little or no red content, so they looked more like this.  |

To remove the one piece grip, you have to remove the backstrap. I remove the bottom screw that connects it to the triggerguard first, then remove the two that connect it to the frame. The backstrap and grip will usually come off together, then the backstrap and grip can be separated. It's best to strip the old finish chemically. If you sand then finish off, you'll end up with a grip smaller than the grip frame. I use the stripper from Jasco, it's nasty stuff and will usually eat your gloves. Citri-strip works too but not as quickly. It'll be obvious where the finish comes off and where it remains. The two Model P's came like that. The Pietta 1860, I did myself. First stripped the finish with white vinegar. The concentrated kind made for cleaning. Then I aged it with ferric chloride, followed by chlorine bleach. It's since been converted to .45Colt with a Kirst gated kit.  |
