Local pawn shop had a NM SBH. I couldn't pass it up. The previous owner had done some work on the grips to make a better handhold on it. I think it adds to the character of it. I do need to find a new front site insert if anyone has any recommendations. Put my cheaters on last night and noticed the engraving on the top of the barrel that says made in the 200th year of American Liberty. Can anyone shed any light on that?

THAT IS A "LIBEETY RUGER" MADE IN 1976, THE 200th YEAR OF OUR FOUNDING AS A NATION ON JULY 4, 1776. 1976 WAS A BIG YEAR WITH A LOT OF CELEBRATIONS AND PARADES AND HOOPLA. ALL OF RUGER's REVOLVERS WERE MARKED ON THE TOP AS IS YOUR NEW ACQUISITION.

And the barrel has been shortened. SBH barrels were 7.5” as made.

I've used that sight "insert" kit. It worked.

Well, most of what you seek has been answered. To re-cap. All of the guns built by Ruger in 1976 wore the "Liberty" rollmark. Only a small group of the very low production guns have any extra value. And then they have to be ANIB generally. And as noted,, the barrel has been chopped & the front sight has been modified. Original barrels were 7-1/2" long.
So, buy the Brownells kit, re-do the insert, and shoot the heck out of it.

Or, alternatively, you can probably open beer bottles with that front sight !

Thanks for all the tips, I'll have to order that from Brownells.
Funny, I remember the fourth of July parade in 1976. I was 5 years old and still remember where we were standing and asking what bicentennial meant.

Since you have to do some sight work why not do it right & get one from 2Dogs here on the forum, you will be much happier.

That's a great idea, but does it have to be heated to remove the old sight, and solder the new on?

I'll 2nd Sixshot's recommendation. The more vertical front post face almost partridge style is easier to focus on particularly at our age.

And a gold bead makes it even mo' better.😄 That is a Fermin Garza front sight he made for a BFR of mine.
