Are the cylinders from the various calibers of mid-frame flattops all the same length? Churning over an idea for a caliber conversion and it would seem to me that a 357/9mm cylinder would rechamber to 45 a bit easier/better than a 44.

But, my Clements 45 AR was built from a Midframe 357 Magnum. Cylinder Body is 1.585" with .060" gap between the cylinder and frame. Hope this helps...

I'd have to go & try measuring a few to see. Not sure if I have enough of the NM Flattops to measure, and give a good answer. (Most of my guns are OM's.)

The 45 Flat top cylinder measures 1.610" in length and is 1.664" with a piece of brass in it.

Good stuff guys! Thanks. Just got my hands on a couple flattops to measure. 45 Convertible measures 1.620" and a 44 Special that comes in at 1.613". Curious if the 357/9mm are the "short" ones in the group.

I can't help but notice there is room between the 357 cylinder @ 1.585 and the 44spl cylinder @ 1.613 to slide a 41 cylinder in the mix.
Just sayin'

To answer a question that only I might ask, I took a NM flattop 45 cylinder and dropped it into an OM 357 flattop. It fits fine except it would need a end shake shim in the front. Indexing and timing seems fine. Food for thought.

Minimal barrel/cylinder gap on this one. It clears and turns just fine.
