The Home Commander and I have a trip coming up to recon WY for the third time and we were wondering if there were any "Must See" recommendations you all would make along our route.
Our current route/plan looks something like this (but if we need to detour to see something, we can make adjustments) ...
BelleFourche - Colony - Hulett - Moorcroft - Upton - Sundance - Hulett - Aladdin - Beulah - Spearfish - BelleFourche (249mi)
BelleFourche - Newcastle (via Spearfish Canyon) - Torrington - Sunrise - Wheatland - Casper (392mi)
Casper - Kaycee - Buffalo - Ten Sleep - Hyattville - Worland (259mi)
Worland - Greybull - Dayton - Ranchester - Sheridan - Big Horn - Clearmont - Recluse - Gillette (262mi)
Thanks!
Mike

I don't see Cody in any of your travels or it's surrounding areas. Not sure if that's off your list. But we always enjoy going to Cody.

Thanks Kevshell,
We hit Cody up on the previous trips (GREAT visit and we'll definitely make it back there again someday!), so we're planning on hammering out the central/north-eastern part of the state pretty hard (except for the run down to Torrington/Ft. Laramie and the run back up to Worland/Greybull area). We haven't been able to make it over the top of the Bighorns via Hwy14 yet, so we wanted to try and fit that in (weather/road conditions permitting). Dreaming of finding 15-20 acres out there to set up a home range and maybe do some teaching after retirement.
Thanks Again for the reply!
Mike

Once you hit Greybull then turn west to Cody. A guy can spend a couple days going through the Buffalo Bill museum of the West complex with one day just in the firearms museum itself. There are five museums under one roof.you will live the pass from Buffalo to Worlsnd over the top of the Bighorn mountains.
I stopped in Ten Sleeps in May and visited with Bill Fuchs at the gun shop there on Main Street and we talked Colts and their clones for nearly half an hour. He goes by Leveraction Bill on the Colt forum and does awesome repair and restoration work. Watch for the wild horses between Greybull and Cody as well.

Thanks Kings6!!! We did that pass last time and you're right, it's Beautiful! That drive and the Spearfish Canyon were "Must Do Agains" for this trip.

Mike I'm not sure if you've explored that highway 14 and highway 16 area or not. We were pulling an RV out west and I believe we were told to take highway 16 and not highway 14 as the latter would be rough if we were pulling a fifth wheel (elevation, tight roads, etc.) . Even so we took 16 and the road itself was fine but it definitely has some serious elevation changes there. Therefore you get snow at elevation when you could be wearing shorts down below. Something to think about. If there's a major elevation change between where you live and where you need to shop, you might have some difficulties when you wouldn't think you would have a problem. They just had snow about 7 to 10 days ago around the Beartooth pass and also in the Absoroka wilderness. Beautiful area though.

Since you're in the area, Devils tower is something to consider if you have time

We'll be monitoring road conditions for sure before heading over 14. We did the 16 route in November 2021, but we'll be in a rental instead of my truck on this trip, so I'm gonna play it safe. Devil's Tower is definitely on the list again too!
Thanks All... keep 'em comin'!!!

Sheridan is on my list whenever I can get out that way. Stop by the Weatherby plant, don't know if they do tours or not.

In Kaycee ( home of Chris LeDoux) there’s a great museum with lots of history of the area. A lot of the Lincoln county wars history happened there. Just North in Buffalo, ( Longmire country) has a great museum as well, and the old Occidental next door is a great place for a meal and beverage. Hey 16 heads west towards Cody from there. A beautiful drive.

If you like to hike…. Bomber Mtn in the bighorns. B25 crash site.
Cloud peak.
I’ll be packing up to both again next week. Lots of rock chucks and trout along the way.

Great Intel.... Thanks Guys!!! Yep, we visited Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument in 2021 and will be visiting again someday... I hope. bearskinner... Those are the exact reasons Kaycee is on our "WE ABSOLOUTELY MUST VISIT" checklist. Chris Ledoux played a huge part in my life and I'm grateful to have seen him at least one time at a live concert. We'll be adding the Occidental Saloon to our meal plans... Thanks! hha - good tips! Probably not a lot of hiking this trip, but I'll call WY G&F to see about what paperwork is needed for varmints. Maybe I can sneak another handgun along to harass those guys a bit (The rock chucks... not the Wardens). Mike

Prairie dog towns you can drive to
