With minutes to go in a GunBroker auction, this Taurus Model 85 .38 Special had no bids so I made a lowball offer and won it. Arrived today, solid, nice little gun.

I remember those Model 85 Taurus snubbies. A few questions, if I may. Is it Plus P rated? (I can't remember, I think "no.") Is it durable, or does it quickly wear? Do you know if Taurus USA still supports this model, or have they replaced it with the 856, and no longer support it? The one I worked on many years ago, seemed to be a good gun. I'm looking for good ones on Gunbroker currently...but I would prefer being able to handle one before I buy. Thanks for your time.

In my humble experience with them (I have owned two long before this one), they are well made, well finished, durable guns. The caveat is, they were all guns from the early ‘80’s. Not +P rated, but that’s not a factor to me as there is plenty of great standard pressure .38 Special rounds out there. Not sure if Taurus still supports it, but so far I have never needed to repair any of mine. There are plenty of parts available on gunbroker and Ebay however.

Those are quality revolvers. I still carry one I bought in 1985. The shrouded ejector rod version is when Taurus began their "lifetime" warranty.

Thank you for the replies, gents. It appears that the new 856 is less reliable than the 85 it seems to have replaced. If I had my druthers, I would get a 2.5 Model 19 or 66 S&W and be done with it. Personal economics dictate otherwise.
