I HAVE A GOOD SUPPLY OF SWIFT .452 A-FRAME 300gr BULLETS (NIB & PULLED), AND DECENT SUPPLIES OF FREEDOM ARMS, STARLINE AND WINCHESTER 454 BRASS, A LOT OF W-296 AND A LOT OF REM 7 1/2 PRIMERS. THINKING OF TRYING 30grs OF W-296, THE REM 7 1/2 PRIMERS AND THE FA AND MAYBE THE STAR LINE CASES WITH AN AFTER SIZED TRIM LENGTH OF 1.373". I DO NOT NEED A BALLS TO THE WALL MAXIMO LOAD AS THESE LOADS ARE FOR USE IN IN A 12" FA MODEL 83 AND INTENDED FOR DEER HUNTING.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE 300gr SWIFT A-FRAME LOAD FOR THE FA 454 REVOLVERS?

The Swift 300 gr Aframe is my #1 hunting bullet in 3 454 Casull revolvers. It's accurate (but all jacketed bullets I've tried grouped well), and kills whitetail decisively.
All hunting loads are the 300 gr Swift bullet, Starline virgin brass trimmed to 1.380", Rem 7 1/2, 1.745" oal.
Favorite load for a 10 1/2" FA is 30.5 gr 296 for 1675 fps.
Favorite load for a 7 1/2" FA and 7" BFR is 27.0 gr #9 for 1625 fps.
The #9 load seems to have less recoil than the 296 load.

Rey my load in my SRH is 31.5gr H110 with the AF, right at 1500 from a 7.5” barrel. 28gr. of H110 I think was one of the recommendations for a 5 shot 45Colt load with a 300gr XTP from Clements, 1300-1350fps.

ROUNDING UP MY USED FA 454 BRASS. HAVE SOME TO "HARVEST", i.e. PRIOR LOADS THAT I DO NOT USE ANYMORE AND NEED TO SHOOT AND HARVEST THE BRASS. SHOOTING IS MORE FUN THAN PULLING BULLETS. WILL USE MY 6" MNP'ed MODEL 83 FOR THE HARVESTING, 320gr FMJ's AND, IIRC, SOME 360gr CAST, SHOULD BE "FUN", THINK I WILL WEAR SOME SHOOTING GLOVES AND ALSO ENLIST SOME HELP.

seminolewind: I HAVE 1 -2 lbs OF No. 9, 16 + lbs OF W-296 SO I AM STICKING TO W-296. IS YOUR TRIM LENGTH OF 1.8" REALLY 1.380"? BTW, I GOT THE 1.373" TRIM LENGTH FROM LOADDATA.COM, IT WAS THE USUAL RECOMMENDED TRIM LENGTH. I THINK I WILL START AT 30grs OF W-296 AND MAYBE TRY 30.5, 31.0 AND 31.5 grains, DEPENDS ON ACCURACY. WITH THE 12" BARREL I SHOULD BE GETTING A MV BOOST SO I DO NOT NEED TO GO TO OR NEAR MAX.

I run 31 grains of W296 with my 300 Swift A Frame ignited by a Remington 7-1/2. 1610 fps from my 10” Freedom Arms.

Rey, yes 1.80” is a typo. Thanks for the catch. I measured 50 sized, virgin Starline cases and the shortest was 1.380” so I trimmed all to that length on a Forster case trimmer and a light inside chamfer. All 3 guns seem to group the AF better when pushed fairly hard. AFs are a little too expensive for me to do a lot of load development, so when I reached 1600+ fps and 3” 100 yd groups, I called it good.

Rey, you could even shoot up some of those loads using your left hand, that's how I shot my buck last fall because of my thumb surgery. I'm guessing those loads should be pretty easy to shoot with that 12" barrel, since its a little muzzle heavy, even being a 454 & that kind of horsepower! The 454 is about as good as it gets, wish I would have kept that old 10" FA I bought used for $800 in 1987!

I don’t have a lot of different loads for the .454, but if you have 2400, I find it holds tighter groups then 296 or H110. I tried the same load as my long time 300 grain Sierra loading, and the A Frames stack on top of each other. Never had a need to chrono the load, but it’s worked well on everything I’ve ever used it on. Everything.

Freedom 7 1/2" 454 w/Leupold variable and three shot group at a rested 100. Handload was 30.2grs 296 Remington 7 1/2 under 300gr Swift... That was awhile ago.... Would most likely be double the size today...

I've fired a fair number of rounds down a FA 454 & I've watched a lot of good shooters unleash a lot of rounds down them. They don't need more velocity & they don't need more accuracy, everyone I've seen has plenty of both, the secret, if you can call it that is quality bullets with the great 454. Feed it quality bullets & it's impossible to fail I think, because it can test bullets!
