A few weeks back boatswainsmate posted about his new acquired 66 no dash-P&R. I participated in the thread posting a pic of my 657 that was a placeholder for my 66 that was stolen in the mid 80’s and I had never replaced,,, but sure did miss the 66. singleactions.proboards.com/thread/36657/new-me-model-66?page=1&scrollTo=468326This past week was picking up a gun at my local shop and an older gentleman comes in with this case. I offered to buy it from him to spark up a conversation. He said it’s free, he was there to consign the gun the case contained, and it comes with some ammo. Asked my dealer if it would be ok to show me. Dealer clears the gun and handed me, yep you guessed it, a 66-2. Nope not a P&R but super pristine. Pictured w/ my 657 and the 66-2. (bottom gun) My excitement was hard to control but said I would like to buy it. Dealer tries to back out of the middle man and I said absolutely not, paid the asking price, filled out the paper work, talked with the gentleman a bit more, finding out the history. Gun was purchased new by him, he thought ~1982 (SN# lines up with that) He had never shot it until a few weeks before he decided to move it along and fired it 18 times. I got the empties and the 2 left in the box of 20. On the way out he had me come to his car to get the ammo. Some Ammo ?,,, Turned out to be 550 rounds all factory, he tells me, had been buying a little here a little there and had this assortment …. … in the best ammo can ever. It’s crazy to me how I put it out there a few weeks back, and the planets & stars align and here it is. FWIW; EVERYONE left that day very happy with the deal.

Mixed feelings here! Totally jealous and happy for you at the same time. Glad you got "such a deal".

Very entertaining post! Great gun and story. The leather case looks like it may have a unique history of its own, and the cache of ammo is an amazing bonus. Your experience makes me want to hit all the gun shops in my area in hopes of finding similar handgun treasures.

Good for you you! All good stuff. I have a 6" Model 66. Only S&W I own. What a great gun it is.
Some days are Diamonds, and some days are Stones. We know what kind you had that day!

21 boxes of factory 38/357mag ammo as a bonus . Around $60 a box guesstimate? Easily a $1,000+? But I haven't bought factory in a very long time.
I know the 66 made you grin, but I don't know what the facial expression is for that kind of bonus.

These Herretts were offered up for the postage ($10) over on the Ruger Forum. My thinking I would use them on my S&W 18-3. Then the 66-2 came along w/ the Pac’s, and just for fun tried them on the 66. After some fitting & re-conditioning… (light is thru the window from the left) … I think they found a new home. FWIW: Some have mentioned that because of the amount of ammo, I took “ advantage” of the gentleman. Keep in mind I really wanted the the Vintage tooled leather rug, to me that was the SCORE!Yes there was more ammo than I expected, by maybe $200, I did step up, PAID the asking price, and the the dealers commission. ALL walked away feeling a Win/ Win,,, this is ALWAYS IMPORTANT to me.

You're too sensitive. I believe everyone was happy for you.
The seller got a sell. The lgs a commission. You got a bonus. We got a great story. That's a sweet transaction.

There is something about snubbies. Perhaps they evoke memories from old detective movies when the heroes carried a snub nose revolver. The 3" barreled guns, while great in their own right, just don't quite look right to me. The 4"barreled gun looks way better-with standard barrels. Heavy barrels throw off the proportions. Hard to beat the old 4" S&W Model 10 if you like fixed sights and the .38 Special round.
The 3 most important words in marketing are, "New and Improved". Somehow the old double action revolver endures in an age where magazine capacity seems to rule. Perhaps for me it's the positive connection with history, much like with the Colt SAA.
Showing my age and old-fashioned sense of style.
