Just today, locally, I discovered an early S&W 629 4". Serial number puts it probably 1972-73. Condition is excellent, tight, wood grips look very good.
What's a going sane/rational price on this?
Thanks!

Haven't seen what I'd consider to be any sane / rational prices, on pre-lock S&W's, for a few years now. For my money, $950 - $1100 would be absolute tops for a shooter. Been seeing them online for upwards of $1800 though - which sorta takes them out of my "shooter" category... What's the asking price?
And by the way, the pre-lock 629 is a great revolver, so don't let my opinion influence you unduly. They aren't making any more of them, so if you want it - and can afford it, roll the dice. Treat it right, & I doubt you will lose any money on it down the road.

72-73 sounds a little early for a 629? 77-78 sounds closer.

Thanks! 629s were first produced in 1979 with a 6" the 4" and 8-3/8" arriving in 1981. As always the price is what one is willing to pay. Around here any 4" S&W .44 starts around $1500.

Is it pinned and recessed? 629s were P&R--ended with the 629-1 in 1982

I was attempting to look up the serial number and date it as I was in the store. Either I got the wrong info or I misread the info.
Serial is N836657
Barrel was pinned.
Price was a bit over $1600.

72-73 sounds a little early for a 629? 77-78 sounds closer. ***** When S&W presented a Model 629 to me, late summer 1980, there were no, or next to no, M-629’s in distribution. Mine had the serrated Combat Trigger, of which 100 to 200 were made. Barrel pin and chambered counterbored. A production Model 629 did not exist until 1980. It is my impression production of the Ruger Redhawk started later than S&W’s stainless .44. The transition from toolroom to production is a huge step, and to get dimensional relationships in order to facilitate assembly requires tuning the orchestra. You don’t see the concert begin without tuning. Had the transition from toolroom to production been so simple, Bill Ruger would have released his bulletproof Redhawk a year earlier. David Bradshaw

$1500 is the starting price range I usually see 454 Freedom Arms Model 83s offered for here in Alaska. The ones that are priced higher tend to stay with the sellers, at least with the ones that I see for sale.

Thank you all for the info. It's a nice piece, but for the price I think I'll wait for the Colt Anaconda.
Probably kick myself for that though.
Of course, I've been prone to change my mind.
