I just traded an old 4 screw Model 29 for a 1959 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in 270. It comes with an original leather sling and an period correct Leupold variable scope. As soon as it hit the LGS the proprietor started trying to talk me out of it. He wants to swap it and a pair of expensive N frame grips for “a deluxe Winchester 94 AE in 45 Colt. The 270 is s great example of a gun that has been cared for but used as it was intended. It does have a rubber butt pad instead of the steel butt plate but it is still a neat old gun. I gave not gotten to see the 94 due to the ice storm but I’ll look at it on Monday is stuff thaws.
Any thoughts since I don’t deal with long guns much?

Keep that Model 70! I have a very well used one made the same year, also in 270 but it’s a Featherweight. I bought it to use as a donor action for a 35 Whelan project but I don’t have the heart to tear it apart, it’s just so good the way it is.

That’s the way I was leaning and you guys helped confirm my thoughts. When I was a teenager an older gentleman who went hunting with us decided he was finished rifle hjnting abc he sold me his old pre 64 270 standard rifle. I carried it for years and killed several elk with it then foolishly traded it for a German made Weatherby 7mm which was a beautiful gun but wouldn’t hit the side of a barn! I was too young to know how to work with it so I sold it out of frustration and regretted the deal ever since. This will help rectify my youthful mistake.

I’ll bet he does want to do that swap,…….the 94AE would have to be engraved and very fancy wood, not have a manual safety, and be a vintage 94 not an AE. Stick with the m70

Keep the model 70. You wanted it bad enough to trade a cool sixgun for it in the first place. I think your brain was on the right track all along.

I picked a recipe from the Speer manual for mine, put three touching at a hundred. It's a post '64.

I am not one to follow the heard, but in this case I say keep the m70, unless you really want the 94.

I'm a Ruger guy. When it comes to rifles,, I have several,,, yet,, my only Winchesters are the older .22 pumps. I love the older S&W's,, and yet,, I too would have considered the trade of one for the CLASSIC Winchester you got. Even I know that the Model 70 like that is MUCH better than the 94 he's offering. Keep the 70!
