I saw the thread about 45 ACP / 45 Auto rim Contenders..., & it made me remember I did something, that I may no longer be proud of...

I long ago had a 45 Win Mag 10" Contender barrel... & I probably did something dumb, but before I had a full grasp on this world of handguns, I had it rechambered to 45 Colt... the funny thing, is I'm almost positive this barrel was rifled in the opposite direction.... yes it shoots accurately today in north America ( assume as well in the southern hemisphere...

this looked like what would have been a factory barrel... any reason why the 45 Win Mag would have been rifled the opposite direction

Most TC Barrels had left hand rifling...

might be something I never noticed on the Contenders... I guess I remember that the Win Mag barrel - 45 Colt, was opposite of my 45 Colt revolver...

I'm guessing the Win Mag barrel would be pretty unusual to come by, I should maybe have been more patient waiting for a proper 45 Colt barrel??? though it shoots great

Both the 45 Colt and WinMag work well in the Contender.

I always found the 45 WinMag another of those cartridges that debunked the roll crimp myth.

It has worked quite well with Magnum Powders for a long time. So, neck tension does as much or more than a roll crimp for combustion.

I use a combination of both crimps on some cartridges. Probably why the Redding Profile Crimp works so well...

It seems like a somewhat obscure cartridge but I have a contender barrel so chambered and have seen 3 others for sale in the flesh, many more online. I would guess there are many more 45 Winchester mag contenders than self-loaders.

We’ll then maybe not a dumb thing to do… it’s currently one of my best deer guns with a set of Williams fire sights installed
