Today I decided to make a run with my Rock Island 38 Super from the "Dumb Handed" position. My right thumb is still a mess, I'm afraid I might even miss the opening of deer season in 2 weeks so it may come down to using my dumb hand to even go hunting. I won't use a semi auto but a little practice never hurts. These Rock Island guns are impressive, at least this one is, it's the only one I've ever bought & I've put quite a few rounds through it with different types of bullets & its never made a hiccup yet plus the trigger is quite good. For the money I'm not sure how you can beat them. Anyway I painted the first few plates of the plate rack & ran out of paint so I put up the empty can to use as a target. I ran the plates but missed the can on the first shot & got it on the second. Pan Cake holster is my buddy Rob Leahy. Notice the skate board tape on the front strap. Not bad for shooting dumb handed at 12 yds with a so called cheap gun that will out shoot quite a few of the more expensive 38 Supers out there. Dick

I see he has found the Super now. Good for you Dick. The absolute best thing they did was alter the case and rim to work in a front headspace chamber (little problem with the older rim headspace guns also). The old rim headspace was pretty faultless IF you used the correct bullet to headspace the bullet shoulder on the lands of the barrel. That condition gave match grade accuracy, but the factory ammo was very poor.

Did I miss something? What happened to your thumb? I hope you'll be alright. You have way too many more stories to tell...

Bob, yes I'm a late comer to the 38 Super & the caliber is impressive. I have a couple of boxes of factory ammo but I've never shot it, I'll have to run a few rounds to see how it shoots. I also have an 8 shot S&W Performance Center gun that I've had for a while & its very impressive. Accuracy is all you could ask for & it shoots very flat with my 128 gr cast HP's'. RJM52 put me on to the 38 Super a few years ago, thanks! Lar4570, I had a small cyst or some type of growth just behind my right thumb nail that's been there for several months & getting bigger so I had to go to a hand surgeon to have it removed. They didn't put me out but they did put me under, deadened my arm up to my elbow & went down right into the knuckle. It's been almost 3 weeks now & it's a long ways from being healed & I'm starting to worry about opening day of deer season that starts in 10 days. There's no way I can shoot right handed now, hopefully next week I can test drive something, maybe my 357 Maximum. Here's a photo of my thumb where they had to make a "V" cut, I guess to avoid nerves, tendons, etc. It's deep, even after 3 weeks part of it is still open. Dick

Dick, I know it’s a long ways from being right, but it sure looks better than the last time I seen it! I think getting your first critter dumb handed will make for a great hunting story.

I wouldn't push that hand to hard. You shoot well left handed so you won't miss hunting season. My brother was a couple of months out of carpal tunnel surgery and decided to try his 10in. 44 mag Contender out just ONE time. Closest I've ever seen him to going to the ground, or dropping a gun. I took the gun from his hand and offered to load him another round but he [politely LOL] declined, once you trip that trigger you are stuck with what you get.

Ouch! FWIW I've seen a few High Master Paper Punchers injure their primary hand/wrist/elbow/shoulder and take up shooting with the other. Each man was quickly shooting High Master scores with the other hand. Tells me that it is pretty much all in your head. Hang in there!

....Oooooo...that looks like it hurts...and yea...don't push it.
Glad you are enjoying the world of. 38 Super. Just added SIG made $50 barrels to three lightweight Kimber 9mms and they shoot great.
RIA does make a great gun for the money...it would be nice if they made a better grade model with an adjustable rear sight and dovetailed front like they do in their other calibers...
Get better soon...maybe see you in the spring...
Bob
