so were on our little convertible trip last weekend, we have not been away from the farm overnight for like 3 years.. one particular night I was coming off my poor sleep Motel room ( explained in another thread ) & had a long day's drive & didn't get to where were staying until like 2:00 AM... seems like I had just gotten to sleep, when the alarm company called me ( so tired I barely knew where I was ) they proceaded to tell me we had a front door breach on the farm... should they call the sheriff... I said yes, as soon as I was awake enough to know what was going on... as the sheriff's deputy was going around the farm, there was nothing wrong with the front door... turned out the front door sensor had failed... worst possible time & place... plus we never leave, but here we were several states away from home & at 4:00 in the morning...
well I'm glad that no one was breaking in, while we were gone...

Geez.. A new Subaru in the driveway. Sales person and then tech person trying to explain all the whiz bang features to us. Think I said, "ok, how to I turn that OFF", 3-4 times. Basically , the car is bugged. Like our cell phones and any smart device that takes voice commands, TV's etc.. Nieces and nephews got us an ALEXA a couple of years ago. on the 3rd day of being in use, we were watching TV and something said on the TV set it off. It called some old black woman who was NOT happy or polite or well mannered at getting a wrong number call. I understand, have rotated shifts, work off shifts and overtime for more than 40 years now. Friends and family know to let me make contact. ALEXA was unplugged and sent back. The facing me, camera port on this lap top has a gun cleaning patch taped over it.

I grew up when technology consisted of radio and partyline phones. I remember when my mother replaced her scrub board with a handcranked wringer washer. Seemed like a great step forward at the time. There were no such thing as clothes dryers and my mom hung everything outside and they always smelled so good that way.

I remember the phone party lines. Mom had electric washer and dryer to my memory but I'm a decade or so behind ya John. She had a Singer sewing machine with treadle. Aerobic sewing... ?

I went looking to get a new truck in 2021. Well, I had to try & order one,, as I wanted a more "basic" working man's truck,, WITHOUT all the fancy techie stuff. It was a PIA to try & get a truck like that,, but finally, my salesman found me one in Va. I drove 7 hours one way to buy it. While it's got a few techie features, (back-up camera,) it doesn't have too much extra crap I do not need.
I refuse to allow such invasive electronic stuff operate in my house. (Well as much as we can.) No Alexa, no Siri, blocked computer cameras, & often turn my phone off to avoid the GPS tracking crap,, just on principle alone. I know my computer has things I can't undo or remove,, but I try hard to avoid as much electronic stuff as possible.
Just a few days ago,, our local PO had a total internet shutdown. No business except in CASH! The PM & I enjoyed the fun with that. He's old school as well. But he said a lot of folks were quite bothered,, and it wasn't his fault. I use game cameras on my house & property. Non-cellular. I rely upon the more traditional stuff,, where internet or wireless crap is not required.

Yep, I’m soooo looking forward to having to special order an new SUV with a manual transmission next year. I simply cannot abide by these new CVT automatics, much less the old automatics.

WHEN I STARTED PRACTICING LAW IN 1972 SECRETARIES TYPED WITH MANUAL TYPEWRITERS USING CARBON PAPER SO YOU WOULD HAVE AN ORIGINAL AND 2 COPIES. A LOT LESS "PAPER" WAS PRODUCED IN THOSE DAYS AND LAWSUIT FILES WERE ALL PRETTY THIN, NOW THEY TAKE UP BOXES, AND BOXES. IN 1972 THERE WERE NO FAX MACHINES, COPY MACHINES, INTERNET, PC's, CELL PHONES NOR MEMORY TYPEWRITERS. MAN, HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED.

I like tech up to a point. When I started in healthcare in the '80s there were not alot of automated machine for even simple things like BPs. I'd start at one end of the hall do BPs manually up the hall. By the time, I got done, the process started again. Technology is not all bad. In my home, we have 2 smartphones, 2 computers, and 4 tablets. My only problem is I can't keep up with it all. A 65 yo brain can't handle all of it.
