Even here on the THIS web forum, I see a growing mention of pistols, semi-autos, getting packed for outdoor chores and hunting. Some years back I used to pack a G23 Glock afield sometimes, size 40 hole in barrel, night sights, capacity. Not a bad choice , logic-wise for in camp, checking stands, after dark duty, bump in night duty. Right ? Over the last few years it seems, but say over the last decade, the 10mm is gaining in that use, full on hunting too. It has the ballistics, I'm not arguing against it. Last Saturday, a cute little new Glock 43X 9mm followed me home and in an effort to bond with it, it's been on my belt. So yesterday, an incident with the BIGGEST spider I've ever seen in Ohio. A huge web built in 24 hours, spanning from corner of garage and crossing a corner of the pepper patch and over to the propane tank and brush across a mowed strip of grass. My walk around the garage path way. Me and my Lab spend a LOT of time in yard, wife teases me about "touring the estate". I've no issue with spiders particularly. Wasps and hornets, my sworn enemies.. So me and the dog rounded the corner, and glint of sunshine on web caught my eye and I looked up in time to not walk into it. Mr spider was front and center, just the body as big as the end of my thumb. If my wife had seen it, she would never go outside again, ever. The rub, the issue here with revolvers vs pistols for field use, the narrow band of pressure needed to function a pistol, bullet nose profile restrictions to function, etc.. Lack of flexibility as to launchable payloads. If my usual C.A. Bulldog 44spec had been in its usual place, on me, a rice load would have been swapped in and POP goes the spider. I had to retreat(embarrassing) back to garage man door and go with the chemical warfare option. Still had to stomp him after he fell to ground. A rice load would have left maybe a wiggling leg or two, rest would have disintegrated. I rest my case. Food for thought stuff.

1st... I just plain shoot revolvers better, so that is why they have become my edc...
2nd... I grew up a boy scout, "leave nothing in the woods but tracks" as a reloader I would always pick up my cases anyway, but some times they just disappear, bounce off of trees etc. so the revolver keeps the empties handy...
but I would say, if you were in big critter country, & you had the choice of a 22 revolver, & even a 9mm semi auto... I always hedge towards displacement... fortunately for me, my revolver can run as big as needed

BTW... if you carry cocked & locked, a rice load could be hand inserted into the chamber, & a quick rack of the slide would get you in business for something bigger

Ya should of snuck up on her, angling around to get a suitable back stop[even a puny 9 should get full penetration ,if ya don't hit a rib] and gave her a lobotomy from 3-4 inches, saving the rice and chemicals for serious pests. lol

I don't load for the 9mm, and 3 grains of rice wouldn't have been enough. Understand I can single load, thanks guys. Just saying, that rural to out in the wild, the flexibility of payloads and load levels of large bore revolver cartridges can't be beat. I've known this forever, but just got a reminder I'd thought I'd share.

It seems every spring we get big spiders around the house, the wife and I catch grasshoppers and feed them, they are just cool to watch, but if they have a web built in a high traffic area we encourage them to move. On the P vs R, if I’m in snake country it’ll be a revo, from a pocket 22wmr to a 500L, if I’m not concerned with snakes and doing yard stuff or field use, then I could be carrying a G29, or 38Super or 45acp. When I was out doing ranch stuff and had an auto loader the chamber had a shot load in it, if the opportunity for a pig or coyote came up I simply racked it out. It seemed the need for a shot payload was always or mostly a “I need it now” proposition, and a bullet was a “ive got time” one. So even with revo, the shot was up first upon cocking. Yes I’ve fired a shot load at a pig or coyote a time or two.

The important thing, is that you saw the web before walking into it & becoming a karate expert.

Spiders big enough to feed grass hoppers to... I'm staying up here in the snow belt, yup. LOL. Spiders can't fly, so no fear of. Like snakes, one big step back will do. Florida family introduced me to banana spiders.. I'm thinking, blend Sixshots 12 shot with rice soaked in wasp spray... All varmint load.. Anything smller than a muskrat.. Kidding, sorta..

Steve... I expect to see some "light vermin" 9mm loads showing up on these pages... have you tried other forms of shot??? Soybeans, plastic pellets or small granules...
seen those "Bug Assult" guns that use air powered salt ( not good for real guns ) nor would something abrasive like sand blasting sand... but expect there is something out there, maybe a little heavier, or smaller than rice, that could turn hand loaded 9mm into somethin effective on your "giant" spiders

Funny, did try 6mm air soft BB's in 480 hulls. Nasty shards of terror.. but not in house friendly. My rice loads can whisk wasps of the drapes with no damage if shot from an angle.

We have some bigguns around here we just call garden spiders... they are like 1/4 tarantula size... bright yellow & glossy black... never seen one in the house yet, but they look like the grizzley bear of spiders

maybe some sand size pieces of plastic... I think that kind of thing is used for plastic form molding, & is available in large quantities... should be able to pick up a zip lock baggie pretty easy

My wife would NOT like... can just see her emptying her 32 into it, or near it, or in the general direction of it. It would be ugly.
