So I forget… on a new stamped barrel blank, is the stamped end supposed to be the chamber end, or the muzzle end
Barrel is a full 1.5” barrel tube from Pac Nor in .475 caliber
Any tips short of not heat stressing the barrel

Chamber is stamped.
This a new barrel? They weren’t making them again yet the last time I talked with them.

Thanks… I’ve had this in reserve for a little over 2 years, just waiting for a project like this

Pretty simple… have a Ruger #3 in a non stock cartridge already… want to convert it to 480 Ruger, as a companion gun for my 480 Super Blackhawk

I heard one time that when you taper a barrel, the barrel has a tendency to stretch. Is that true or one of those "I heard it somewhere." things?

Not heard that… but could guess you may see growth in the .001”’s
Always heard to keep it cool, not let it get too hot, to reduce heat stress

I heard one time that when you taper a barrel, the barrel has a tendency to stretch. Is that true or one of those "I heard it somewhere." things? The barrel blank will lengthen as you cut it. Heat is the culprit. This is why it is important to back off your tailstock from time to time so as not to "kink" the barrel. When it cools, it shrinks back to size. I use a spring loaded live center that negates this concern. I use a bit that puts the heat into the chips, not the barrel.
