I was born in and live in North Carolina but will be moving to South Carolina in the next few months. My father's family are South Carolina natives from back into the late 1600's. Mom's side was from SW Virginia from about the same time frame.
Any of you from the area?

North Carolina sure ain't what she used to be. That's why South Carolina is in my near future. I was born in Charlotte when the population was 245,000 and still had it's small town charm but that is long gone.

Gaston county and hate it, but work is in Charlotte. Thinking about developing the place and moving back to Mississippi. This isn't anything like the State used to be growing up.

Iredell County on the family farm. My ancestors came here in the 1750s. We had a “work house” in TN for 5 years and loved it there. NC is home but it’s no where near what it was when I was a kid. I miss my Old South.

It’s probably not the same because of all the New Yorkers moving there. Lol

I'm a born & raised WNC hillbilly. Still here. Yes,, I too have seen the many changes brought upon us by "imports" who have moved here & then decided to change things.
I wish more of the natives here would STAY & keep the people out that want to change it. Sadly,, the imports have MONEY,, and too many see that as their incentive to sell or move. I see farms sell because the kids do not want to work. I see developments happen because the rugged mountains aren't farmable,, and the kids see money in houses or developments.
But yes,, I'm a proud hillbilly that calls NC home.

Have friends in Raleigh area (tech triangle) of North Carolina. Been to visit them several times. Seemed a bit on the hot side; but pretty nice. They've been offered over twice what they paid for their house a few years ago.
Explored Columbia SC a few years ago. Saw some areas that seemed kind of seedy.
Heard there is an area up in mountains near the Carolina / Georgia border? that is not too hot, humid, or cold. Seems like someone on one of the gun forums moved there (maybe a gunsmith). Would like to find a place like that.

We moved to NC in 2008 to get away from MD. Now we see ourselves leaving NC for Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, etc. to get away from NC. I guess Alaska is all that would be left as the last option. Everything is changing. Certain states are seeing mass exodus because they cannot stand what happened to their state. I'm sure everyone has said this over time. Can you imagine Sitting Bull saying, "there goes the neighborhood...."?

I think we may have discussed this, but we lived in LA (Lower Alamance) from '08-'21). Lived in NC for 26 of my 52 years, loved it & had every intent of staying there. Woulda stayed, but the state shading from purple to blue, combined with retirement & reconnecting/reconciling with family, we bailed for rural MO. Can't speak much for SC, other than to recommend avoiding Murder Beach, but I'm assuming most Carolinians already know that.

Parallaxbill, to what area of SC are you moving? I'm in the northwest part of the state, just north of Greenville. North of I85, there is usually at least one snow every year, and the temps are more moderate in these more hilly areas than those down state.

Chester County, I think it's one of the top four poorest counties in the state but the population is low and has been stagnant for the past 3 decades. Nice place to retire due to low taxes and cost of living but less than an hour from larger cities for medical needs etc. Crime is high but mostly in the town of Chester. I'll be in NW Chester County. Out in the county, criminals conduct there activities at their own risk.
