Today I looked at a S&W model 57 8 3/8” late 70’s gun that is chambered for .45 Colt. Barrel is marked .45 Colt but the frame says 57. The gun has a letter from Roy Jinks confirming the gun came from the factory like that and was a mistake. The gun is for sale but I don’t know what to offer? Any suggestions? Do I just Value it at a normal 57 8 3/8” or less/more? Thanks for any help.

I'm curious, is it pinned and recessed?

Not pinned or recessed. I’m going to buy it if I can. The gentleman thinks it worth slot since it’s miss marked. I’m leaning the other way. It’s nothing I’m interested in personally but he has a set of 5 Liberty Ruger SA that I want.

I've seen miss marked be worth more in coins.
In some guns, I would be nervous about dangerous use from miss marking. With this example, I believe the 45 Colt and the model 57 are both Smith N frames and the 45 Colt usually has less pressure. Should it be good to go?
Prescut You'll have some explaining to do on resell.

I've got a M27 being converted to .45 Colt now. Would be fine to shoot using low/moderate pressure loads.

That gun would likely be worth a premium, but only to one who collects such mismarked guns. The letter from Roy Jinks adds provenance, and proves that it wasn't 'humped' by someone. Me? I'd probably wipe it down good, lube it, and head for the range.

From what collectors say over on the S&W Forums...not much.
If it is a collector grade piece, LNIB and unfired it may but otherwise most people just look at them as "shooters"...
That said, one doesn't see as many 8 3/8" 25-5s in .45 Colt compared to 57s with 8 3/8" barrels..

I was looking at it as a shoot. Comes in a wood box and is “unfired ” according to the owner.

I wonder if the cylinder throats are oversized on it? That was an issue with Smith & Wesson 45 Colts from that era. If so, I'd leave it unfired and see what it pulls in on gunbroker and find a good shooting one.

The S$W 45 Colts post-pinned/recessed had the proper cylinder throats starting with the 25-5s with NO PIN.
