1. I realized when I went to ask this question that I didn't know what to call them. I know that several companies make them, slightly different yet similar designs. I know a few of them are called penetrators, but has the industry or shooting community at large come up with a term for this style bullet?
2. Mostly out of curiosity, I have no need or desire to try them myself, has anyone used them on game?

Underwood Ammo uses them in a lot of their ammo, they call them the Monolith bullet. You can go to their website and read about them, personally I think they are just a gimmick. I've never shot any so just my opinion.

I thought it was said they would blow the lungs clean out of the body. Or at least some uneducated person said that. I am shooting the Lehigh 55 grain penetrators out of my .32 acp. They have been very accurate out of my Beretta 81 surprisingly.

AS of Russia first offered the design in their molds. It was supposedly invented by a famous Russian bear hunter. A friend had a mold and shot a few deer and a black bear with it. He abandoned it because the wfn and lfn from lbt significantly out performed it on game.
The bullet did perform about the same as a swc and fed smoothly in his 1911. I still wouldn't waste my money on the mold, let along what they charge apiece for the mono bullets.

My BIL and I shot some trapped hogs with the Phillips head self defense ammo out of our 40 S&W's. DISMAL at putting down medium hogs at close range. After waiting and waiting for the third hog to at least lay down I grabbed my 22 and ended it. We popped the rest at the range and went back to traditional hollow points.

Instead of "you'll shoot your eye out" it is now "you'll blow your lungs out"

X2. I believe they were specifically designed for that.

Yes. We tried head shots, lung, heart, shoulder and quartering away. All of them were dismal except the head shots. I was so frustrated by the results of supposed "premium self-defense" ammo I refused to shoot pigs with them. For me, that is saying something. Thats like someone else saying they wont shoot prarie dogs because they dont like the ammo.

They penetrated about the same as a swc.
