How big a piece of mastodon tusk does it take to make some grips, measured from top to bottom? Does it matter if the tusk is checked, like splitting lengthwise?

depends on what kind of grips are being made. for most single action grips, scales measuring 5" x 2 1/4" x 1/2" would work. a little checking is usually not a big deal if the ivory is fully cured but it would probably be best to have it stabilized.
