Good morning all,
I’m open to suggestions. My initial plans of putting a 5in .44 mag barrel on a m28 frame for a .44spl conversion didn’t work out; cylinder gap issues. Now I’m hunting a 6in m28 barrel to cut down and rebore to .44. Never having had to worry about this, I’m clueless as to who does rebores these days. Should I expect a fairly long lead time?

Not sure on lead times but I talked with Al Siegrist earlier this week about reboring a model 520 barrel at his MI shop and he said send it up once it arrives.

Had a barrel rebore in my last Clements rebuild… I think he had to wait almost a year to get the barrel back, before he could start on my Custom build

Now I’m hunting a 6in m28 barrel to cut down and rebore to .44. Never having had to worry about this, I’m clueless as to who does rebores these days. Should I expect a fairly long lead time? ***** First, I’d decide which preferred contour. Second, list work i& cost, rebore vs set-back, itemizing details for each. Reckon by “cylinder gap issues” to installing an M-29 barrel on an M-28, you refer to the shorter M-28 cylinder. Set back shoulder of M-29 barrel enough to close gap and insure THREAD TIMING. Then finish BARREL FACE for desired bbl/cyl gap. If setting back the barrelmwipes out the forcing cone, recut for a short 11-degree cone. Shorten cylinder CENTER PIN and EJECTOR ROD to work with set-back .44 barrel. If you prefer a skinny barrel, keep looking. Had I a good old M-29 barrel, I’d want to take advantage of it. If a fine M-29 bore wears too-deep a forcing cone, shortening can only help, and may not require retouch. As the M-29 rib is wider than the M-28 rib, work probably required to match. David Bradshaw

Burnston, let me know if you can use a 8.375” 27 barrel instead??

Here's one with a 5" barrel that Andy Horvath built.

He might have found a model 24 barrel.

He might have found a model 24 barrel. Will a 24 barrel mate with a 28 frame without any big issues?

Yes it will. I have used them several times on 28 frames.
