Can someone recommend a place for Carolina Blacks, right now I can’t recall if it’s North or South that has the big nonhibernating ones. I was given on outfit as a reference and cannot get a reply back from them, I understand with C19 it’s been tough for smaller outfits. I’m looking for a place that will take a group of Handgunners 4-7 for about a week. Any recommendations or outfits to avoid would he appreciated, was hoping for a hunt this year but it may be too late.

A good friend of mine showed me pictures recently of a huge black bear he took in NC. He told me he has never seen so many big bears! I started to ask him who he hunted with -- he mentioned the outfit is raising their price to 20k. Last year they charged 15k. I didn't inquire further....

The last outfit I was trying to contact was 6k, which I considered quite good we’re willing to take parties of 4-8 and hunt you all on the same place and share the cabin with only your friends. Which was another plus, but getting a reply back for handgun use has gotten me nothing but crickets!!!

20k? Maybe we need to forget crops and start planting bears! Probably hard to keep them in their place though...

I live in WNC,,, and we do have some mighty big black bears for sure. However,, most of the outfitters are in the eastern part of the state,, and I have zero knowledge of them.
I will say that most of the hunting is with dogs,, and as such,, many old time hunters do NOT think a handgunner is adequate. In fact,, I know many bear hunters,, & I have been told to NOT bring a handgun if I hunt with any of them. I politely told them that I wouldn't bother them with my presence. I had one guy say; "We had a guy shoot a bear with a .44 mag & when we skinned it,, after a guy shot it with his 30-06,, took the hide & shook it & the bullets fell off the skin." I can't argue with them because they will NOT listen. Plus,, many houndsmen feel a handgunner will "accidentally" shoot one of their expensive dogs.
Sad,, too many of these folks fail to understand SERIOUS hunters.
Good luck in your search.

B and D hunt club out in Hyde County. They have a website. Offer both dog and stand over bait hunting.

"B and D hunt club out in Hyde County. They have a website. Offer both dog and stand over bait hunting."
I'd be real careful about this.
I went to google the website & it mentions dog & baited stand hunting on the info/link page. However,, on their website,, NOTHING about hunting over bait.
NC Wildlife Commission rules & regs state; "Bears may not be taken while consuming bait."
There are a lot more details,, and you can read the complete regulations on the NCWRC website, (ncwildlife.org) and on pages 54, 55, 60, and 61 concerning the legal methods of taking bear.
We are allowed to use baits to attract bears to an area,, but NOT allowed to hunt over bait. So,, I'd be asking direct, serious questions about this when I talk to ANYBODY who offers such services. They MIGHT be putting out bait stations,, but no stands within sight of the bait stations.
NC Game wardens love to catch illegal bear hunters.

They bait year round, but their stands in season are in standing corn, soybeans, and peanut fields. We can hunt standing crops.

From the NCWRC regulations digest;
"For the purposes of bear hunting, bait means any natural, unprocessed food product that is a grain, fruit, nut, vegetable, or other material harvested from a plant crop that is not modified from it's raw components." And right under that; "Bears may not be taken while consuming bait."
Both of these quotes are directly from the Regulations. I'd say that all it'd take is a game warden who looks at the wording of the law if someone were to kill a bear while it was in a peanut patch,, and then potential problems could arise.
We all know that different Wardens & judges can look at the same law & make a judgement call one way or the other. Personally,, I'd not take that kind of chance.

Those regs are super confusing!!!……”unprocessed food product” would be any crop,….anything edible??? So the only way to take a bear would be as it wanders through the woods aimlessly. Not while in a crop, or under an oak eating acorns, or while eating wild grapes or berries. I’d want clarification in writing and a name of an official giving the clarification, if it in fact is that vague. My understanding of baiting is edible materials intentionally set out to attract an animal, not a naturally occurring food or preexisting crop meant for farming.

Just call wildlife and ask for clarification. In other parts of the same manual, they say standing crops are not bait for duck or deer, so one wouldn't think they are for bear. NC Game Wardens are usually professional and reasonable, but there's always going to be that guy on that day situations.
