I'm not really a semi auto guy, but am a big bore guy ( actually I don't shoot many mid bore guns, I have a tendency to gravitate towards both the small & big calibers )
I've never fired a 50 GI 1911, but have, for a while been thinking about a smaller revolver chambered in 50 GI... I have thought about a 50 GI Cylinder for my custom 50 A.E. Super Blackhawk, or for my 500 JRH BFR... but what really gets me going, is thoughts of something like...
anyone done something like a Single Six in 5 shot 50 GI???

That would never fit in a Single Six. Not enough Real Estate in the cylinder window or forcing cone areas.
Hamilton Bowen did them in Midframe Flattops at one time.
I'd considered this option at one time, but went with the 480 Ruger instead.

one thing, I think the 50 GI is a lower pressure cartridge suitable for the 1911, so likely around the 45 ACP pressures
I don't have a donor gun, that I can think of right now anyway... just wondering how small it could go... the Super Blackhawk & BFR are obviously much larger ( still would like a cylinder for one or both of my 50 single actions )... maybe a Vaquero size frame???

New Vaquero and Midframe Flattops are the same size. Should work...

I actually have one being built by JRH, it is being built on a 629 frame and DW barrel assemblies. Which reminds me I need to call and see how work is progressing and talk to him about another project. I also have several other guns chambered in 50GI, DI AR15's (more than one) a Glock conversion, a MAC 10, and 2 encore barrels. I love the 50GI, it is a great shooting round that doesn't beat you up and is a hoot to shoot. When I want to get beat up I have a 444 marlin barrel as well as a 500 S&W barrel that do that very well.

What kind of ballistics did you get? Really don't know anything about the 50GI.

this covers most factory ammos, & gives an idea what's been done so far... I'm not sure the difference in velocities of the 45 ACP out of a 1911, or out of a single action, but suspect the 50 GI would be similar by % www.guncrafterindustries.com/50-gi-ammunition/of course handloading opens a whole new can of worms... finding a lead bullet with a meplat as big or bigger than the Matt's 250 grain wadcutter I use in my 45 Colt EDC revolver would be a lot of spank for the powder burned...

Could be a fun second cylinder for a 500jrh. It's like a fat saa-level 45 Colt. Guess I am too used to the Linebaugh. My plinking load for it is a 355gr swc @1250fps.

because I have a 50 A.E. revolver, my 500 JRH BFR, only sees hotter loads... the GI would offer something softer than the 50 A.E. which is still pretty respectable

What kind of ballistics did you get? Really don't know anything about the 50GI. Factory ballistics is 300gr 750fps or so, if I remember correctly. Handloading does open up the possibilities I have run bullets up to 500gr cast that were designed for the 50GI and as a standard I like 350-400 gr bullets @ 850-950 fps depending on barrel length. I run the 50GI at 45acp +p/23,000 psi and cases hold up great. I have noticed that in my Glock conversions I tend to keep the 350-400gr bullets in the 800 and below so as not to stress the gun.

Thinking maybe something like this... turned into a 5 shot 50 GI www.gunbroker.com/item/922197623 ( this one is not my style of gun... looks to have been beat up on purpose to look old, for SASS... are those 2 "kill" notches on the hammer??? ) but finish it with a Montado or Super Blackhawk hammer, maybe a birdshead grip frame or one of Ronnie's "birds"... or a Bisley Grip & hammer... 3.5" to 5" barrel... maybe in stainless... would definitely want to keep the ejector, with a rimless case ( so no notches like my 45 Colt snubbie ) I'm OK with the fixed sights, as long as the front sight is regulated www.gunbroker.com/item/920789412

That'd be a pretty little BBQ gun with some fancy scratching and some ram horns

TIM: WHY DID YOU LET IT GO? Gotta share with your friends. I can’t keep them all and I need to have less “stuff”. I’m trying to focus and simplify but whenever I do, something comes along and grabs my attention and I veer off on another tangent. Tim
