I was loading up my lambs for the locker plant yesterday… with shortage of locker plant workers, we were pushed out a couple months longer than I like… we decided to keep a ewe lamb for breeding, and I had to unwire a pass thru between the 2 pens, to move the lamb in with our breeding ewes and ram… I used to have issues with the ram, butting, when we were both younger… when that happened I would tackle him , flip him on his back, & sit on him, and call all his girls over to see that he wasn’t the “big dog” that usually worked for several months, before he would try that again… it's been over a year since he has “rammed” me… yesterday I had turned my back to him to open the pass thru, and I didn’t see him back up and lower his head…. Mrs was watching, and couldn’t get the words out before I felt his “rammer” contact my butt… because I was bent over a little removing a twisted wire holding the pass thru closed, and the fact that he probably goes over 300 lbs now… he had no problem boosting me right over the fence… Mrs saw the whole thing, and was sure I got hurt… I was fine, but had to give her a little grief for not warning me, or at least recording it for funniest home videos… could have made some money out of that clip

As I was reading this,, I was forming a mental picture,, and by the end I was chuckling a good bit. A video would have most likely allowed a good deep belly laugh!
So,, did you get back in there & show the girls (and him,) who was the boss?

I'm really liking the somewhat new, Advil Dual Action. Ibuprofen/Acetamwhatever, together in one pill. Just sayin'.

as far as additional training...actually I was short of time, that & the last time I tackled him, he almost got the better of me... & if I wasn't dominant, that could create even more "issues" ( he's at least 75 lbs heavier now, than the last time we wrestled... & I'm a year older )
it's amazing how hard they can butt heads without any issues ( the Ewes butt heads quite a bit as they squabble for pecking order ) ours are all polled ( no horns ) and those girls will back up 20 feet apart, & bash each other 3-4 times until their dispute is settled, just like you see with wild rams do on the mountain...
I'm surprisingly pain free today...

Sounds like time for heavy seasoning and a slow cooker.

We really like lamb ( we butcher at 8-10 months, they are lighter weight but full size by then ) I've never really tried Mutton before... I don't think I'd have a problem with it, if it's more "gamey"... our lamb is not gamey at all... it tastes like something between Beef & a non gamy venison, & the chops are incredible at medium rare... not a lot of meat on a lamb chop on this hearty breed, at that age... 3 - 4 makes a meal for me, depending on size
we have a ewe that had problems with lambing last year, only had one lamb ( most mature ewes have 2 ) then lost her single, & didn't get bred last summer, when I had her in with the ram... so if she is no longer productive ( & we'll have to deal with that, sooner, as well as with the other ewes, & the ram eventually ) at some point in the future... we started our "lil flock" 4-5 years ago, so we haven't had any non productive adults that we've had to deal with yet...
I bought the stuff to make summer sausage & meat sticks, & jerky last year... I haven't had time to play with it yet... if the ewe I mentioned above, doesn't produce this spring, I may send her in to the locker & do all boneless & try Mutton & see if we actually like it... if we are not crazy about it, I'll have to get off my butt, get the grinder stuffer & digital smoker out, & try some seasoned stick recipes

When I was growing up my grandparents ran a large tow crop farm and had a workers camp for their migrant workers to live in during summer season. They residents were a mixture of Native American, African American and Hispanic.
At that same time my dad worked with a guy who was a real pain of a coworker who also had a flock of old gummer ewes. One day the coworker thought he would really stick it to dad by offering to sell him the whole flock of gummers for $1 a head. Dad took him up on the offer and bought close to 20 head and hauled them to my other grandpas farm. What the coworker didn’t know was the migrant worker camp were willing to pay $10 a head for those old ewes! Dad and I would load five up at a time in the back of the old 59 Chevy, close the canopy door and make the 20 minute drive to the camp where folks lined up with cash in hand to grab an old ewe, toss it down so they could cut its throat and start butchering right there behind the cabins. The women had a pot to catch the blood from the slit throat and used it for cooking. I think the only thing left when they were done was the baaaaa!

I love good lamb chops & a few years ago we were hunting in Montana & stopped at a restaurant, I think in Ennis or Twin Bridges, can't remember. Anyway, I ordered a rack of lamb & it was amazing, I wanted to head into the kitchen & propose to the cook....until I found out it was a guy! Plus my wife wouldn't have understood anyway.

My GF was a vet and I was working on pens I got rammed. Luckily he didn’t get much of a run but hit me across the shoulders.......I stood up real slow. Not by choice.......and we had a discussion.....

Cousin used to shear and had me catch for a couple times. Ewes generally weren’t bad but when those big Suffolk rams came through you got a real workout grabbing them and sitting them down on their butt!

All of this brings back some funny memories, I’ve chuckled all the while reading these exploits. Living a farm or ranch life should be a prerequisite between grade school and jr high, do it for two years, you’ll learn some valuable lifelong lessons Trapr

I wouldn’t trade a single farm or animal caused scar or broken bone for the life of any of my town raised friends growing up. Crap, half of them STILL don’t know where they’re you’d vines from! They are perfectly content to scavenge for dead food in the aisles of the supermarket and thing it was created in that shape, color or package!

I walked past a section at Walmart this morning that was "created in that shape"... a whole section of fake chicken...
I guess I don't understand the vegan thing... I guess it's OK to not eat meat if you don't want to... but if that was really the vegan goal, why do they keep trying to make vegan products that have the taste & texture of meat???
