Thinking I want to change out the standard grip frame to a Bisley frame on my custom 45-70 BFR... sent the Magnum Research custom shop a message... got this reply... just in case anyone has been thinking about similar... I know my 45-70 is old enough to have had a Ruger rear sight, & stainless Super Blackhawk hammer... going to need to check my serial prefex... I'm building a custom holster, hoping I can fit both my long frame & short frame BFR's... thinking this would be easier if they had the same grip frame, with how I'm putting the chest holster together... these 2 guns...

Sent mine in last year about this time, had to be close to four months at that time to get mine back, I did get a second cylinder in 45 Colt fitted too, as mine is a 454 Casull. I asked for tight throats on the new 45 Colt cylinder so I could size them myself, as I have Manson reamers, they were just what I asked for at .451 when I got the new cylinder. Reason I went that route is the throats on my original 454 were way oversized, I had severe leading problem that I did not have at all with same loads in my 45 Colt Ruger's. Both coated lead and gas-checked lead is what I normally shoot and the BFR 454 cylinder is the only gun that I had problems with leading. Now, when I use my new 45 Colt cylinder, in same gun I have no leading issues or problems at all with the same loads. If I cast my own or bought larger bullets I could probably have worked with it, but as it was going in for a grip frame anyway, and I like having both. Overall, very happy with mine now and i can sure see why you want both the same, especially with the calibers you are shooting !

You should have had them check the throats. They keep pretty stringent standards and will correct any problems.

Jack Huntington can do a grip frame mod for you if you send your grip frame and a tracing of your hand. Helps with recoil tremendously. Well-worth it IMHO.

45MAN…. I agree… however I ordered them from Fermin, with purpose in mind… I want to keep a properly regulated front sight, and a rear sight available to keep with the guns, for hunting situations, in case of electronic sight failure… I have stainless plug screws that will go on the guns, after I get the front sights regulated…
The one on the 45-70 is extra extra tall, as that barrel had more than 4” trimmed off it
The holster I’ll be making will be a leather chest flap holster, that will sit at about a 45* angle, and use Simply Rugged’s chesty puller system… I’ll be forming kydex as a liner, to give the leather some shape ( so it doesn’t just look like a pouch, and keep the guns secure… I was hoping that I could also fit my Super Blackhawk 480 Ruger in the same holster, but it’s likely enough of a challenge to fit the 2 BFR’s with different frame sizes… at least getting matching grip frames, will help with fit, and with consistency in grip and shooting

But I didn't put more money into it. If I remember correctly the thoats were .454 or .455. Been a while. The new owner shoots jacketed bullets and is quite happy with it. I put the money into a FA 475
On another note I fit a bisley frame to a buddy's 444. Wasn't to hard at all. Took longer to finish the grips than it did to file down the ears and polish out all the machine marks.

My serial on the 45-70 starts with BR… so I can just switch and get an exact match to my 500 JRH… should aid on shooting, and help with holster fit, with the holster I’m building

I just don't know if I have that kind of skill. The big hold up would be the ability to sew the leather. And finding the correct non rotting nylon thread to use. If you don't mind me asking magnumwheelman is this a first attempt or have you made a few before ?. Where could I gain the knowledge to attempt such a feat ? I do like simplyrugged's chesty puller system have been looking at them as an option for my BFR.

I have made 15 or 20 a couple years ago… start with Tandy… and there are several holster makers here that can offer advice I sew everything by hand… I use a stitch marker ( looks like a spur on a handle ) that puts little dents to mark your stitches evenly… an awl can prepunch your holes, or there are little “pitchfork” looking tools that punch multiple holes at the same time… I’ve even used a drill press with tiny bit, to punch holes through multiple layers, or through stiffening agents ( I used aluminum sheet once, though on this project, the stiffener will be kydex I bought books on lacing, and tooling… did some tooling projects but not really any holsters… made my mother a tooled leather jewelry box with red roses with green stems and leaves When I started, I disassembled some dry rotted antique holsters and used them for patterns for some antique guns I had… this holster will be my own pattern and a new style

See the “necessity is the mother of invention” thread in the lounge section, if you would like to follow along on the build… the 45-70 goes back to Magnum Research to get a grip frame that matches the 500 JRH… will help with shooting consistency, and ease in fitting the holster

Got a call today from BFR motherland just a few minutes ago... My new Bisley gripped 45-70 is on it's way back home... Shipped out to MR on 1-24... they called me today, that it's ready to go... by my calculation, that's only a 21 day turn around ( of course they are only a couple 100 miles north of me ) but really happy with that turn around...
