We got started into a discussion about the little guns in my hunting thread and I figure there are more of us here that are fans. With the exception of a few years of junk these are solid little no frills guns and some of them shoot exceptionally well. So here goes a Charter Thread. This 44 Bulldog was carried daily by a former Lincoln Co deputy. After he retired it was his nightstand gun. When I got the gun from a mutual friend it was still loaded with the ammo he had on his nightstand. The holster is a Roy Baker. That was his daily carry. Later they standardized and went to 9mm semi autos. Later they transitioned to Glock 45s. Under Sheriff Montgomery they carried anything they shot well. One of the deputies carried a model 58. A few carried Colt 1911s.

Here is what they should have built along with what they did build. 4.2" Target bulldog. I used this gun to kill a giant sow as she charged. "]

My 5" Target bulldog. It is amazing how much better these grips feel and how much better the gun looks just from changing the grips. I will probably re-work the front sight later on. This one rides in a holster by Doc.

Very nice. What bullet is that in the last pic? The lead hollow point.

Those are NICE!
The stock rubber grips are about the most uncomfortable grip I've used. The current set I have on my 357 has been modified with a belt sander to ALMOST fit/feel right, with most of the meat along the back strap gone.
The Pachmyer Compac is OK, but still a bit of a reach for me.
The walnut Bulldog grips are pretty darned good-feeling on any of the Charter models.
The fatter, more squarish, checkered grips they put on the 38s fit me well, but a little fill in the front would be nice.
Not a lot of aftermarket options for these, which is a shame. Altamont has a set that I'd consider, but they've been out of stock for quite a while.
One of the neat things about the Charter revolvers is that the innards are pretty much the same across the line and for over a long period, PLUS they are still available at decent prices.
I'll try to dig out some pics tomorrow, or take some new ones. I don't have many of these left, as I came into them so easily and so cheaply for years that I took them for granted and then - deals dried up suddenly.

Nice guns and great shooting...
When I had a bunch of .44 Specials back in the 1980s and 90s I bought one of these...unfortunately it was one of the not so well made ones... Had a flat spot at the bottom of the forcing cone that was bad enough to turn bullets sideways after 10 yards...
About 15 years ago I bought a bunch of .44s and found one without the flat spot and it shot well. Ended up selling off all the .44s but one and it later got sold to the original owners nephew...

I have always wanted one of the original 3” Pathfinder rimfires - based on my lust for the Hutson gun.

I had a stainless one that now resides with one of my friends sons...was an excellent shooter...
Those Hudson Handguner scopes were really neat...I remember Hal Swigget's article about them on a CA Pathfinder...

This is the only one I have. Bought it a couple of years ago. Double action is terrible, but single action is great. Also have a Taurus Ti Tracker (very nice little package). . Been shooting 5.0gr WST under a common commercial 215gr HiTech coated SWCBB. Fun shooting little gun and load. (250gr WFNGC Grizley's at 1,150 fps are a hand full). . Paul

I have an old and new version of the Bulldog: My Christmas gift from dad, 1984: One I bought in 2010: I prefer the older model, but both are decent shooters. I keep things on the light side with 5.5 of Green Dot and a 250 gr Keith. I've never chronographed the load but suspect it's around 700 fps from that 3" barrel. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"
