Seems a Ruger 41mag isn’t going to happen😫😫. Prices are a wee bit out of whack for me.
I (hopefully) have a lead on a 4 5/8” 45LC/45acp convertible Ruger BH. It is an old model but has the transfer bar conversion. I think the price is good but wonder about a couple things:
1) If I wanted to, could the transfer bar set up be reversed? Some of what I read here makes me think I can. Along with that-is it really worth it?
2) Is the frame the same size as a .357 OM Blackhawk? Asking for holster use.
3) Years ago I shot 45LC but don’t have any reloading dies etc. anymore so will need to revisit the loading data…any suggestions are welcome! I’ll most likely use it for carrying during hunting season and maybe some backcountry hiking.
I like the idea of my OM 357 4 5/8 being swapped around with this one.
So, after all that being stated, any suggestions, comments, enabling, or anything else is welcome.

1. Yes it can be reversed if you have the original part or facsimiles thereof.
2. No, The Old Model 357 is on the smaller frame while the Old Model .45 is on the Super Blackhawk frame'
3. Should have no trouble finding loading data.

Tried to work a deal on a OMBH 357 this morning...unconverted...BlackOpsBill got all butthurt when I mentioned it was the base for a custom...went from negotiating on price to $650 firm. I'll head back after Christmas and deal with the owner's son like I normally do.

It's always best to hold out & get the one you want in the first place, then you know you'll be happy. But, you've got some options here so it's going to be a fun chase. The OM 357's as John Taffin mentioned are on the smaller frame, same as the new model flat tops, easier to pack, fun to shoot & every Ruger guy should have one because they are way under rated.
The 41 has been a personal favorite for many years & they have suddenly became really popular & the prices have jumped, no better than a 44 but many of us looney's will counter that by saying less recoil, a bit flatter trajectory, and with 250 gr bullets not a tick of difference in the game fields.
OM parts are out there, you just have to look. You have to get the right parts for the 357, OM parts for the 41,44 or 45 won't work in the 357.
The 45 is the real prize, especially with the dual cylinder. There were fewer made Ruger OM 45's than there were 44 flat tops, so it's a very hard gun to find, with or without the second cylinder (which you won't use much) If the throats are true (452"- 4525") you will have a gun that is very versatile & capable of handling anything you will ever encounter anywhere. All you need to do is pick up a couple of copies of John Taffin's excellent books on 44's & 45's and I think you will have made your mind up by the time you finish reading! Also read anything by David Bradshaw or Ross Seyfried. Enjoy the chase!

Thanks for all the info. Looking at picking up Johns book asap. Some of the excerpts had me hooked from the get go.
Love my 357 and as you stated…everyone should have one. They are a ton of fun and very forgiving if one happens to take a wee slip and tumble(yep…I did).
If this works with the 45 I know I’ll be a happy owner. I’ll have the throats checked to make sure all is good.

They are a hoot to shoot. I picked up one in 45LC and had Andy Horvath make a 45acp/45AR cylinder...Can not go wrong either way.

Those OM .45's are a passion of mine.
And I'd be swapping out the "transfer bar" parts as fast as I could if I found one like that. Not a hard thing to do,, and makes a world of difference in the feel of the action.
As noted above,, there are fewer OM 45's than the OM Flattop .44 mags. And during it's 3 short years of production, (before the change to NM's) there were (6) variations of that gun. The initial 2 models with different barrel lengths, 4-5/8" & 7-1/2", followed by convertibles of each barrel length,, with the .45 acp cylinders, and lastly, the (2) barrel lengths with factory installed brass grip frames. So far,, there are NO factory verified brass framed convertibles.
I won't repeat all the great info above,, but I will say that once you get one,, you will most likely finally understand why so many of us really like them. Download to mild & plink all day,,, move up to medium loads & you'll find it's a sweet effective caliber that can take most game,, or if you wish to make it breath fire,, you can do that as well.
I find that a nice cast & PCed bullet running in the 1100-1200 fps range to be all that's necessary for me. And I quantify that with saying it was my primary caliber that went on an elk hunt in 2019. And I just took a deer with a .45 Colt almost 2 weeks ago.

Friend I have been shooting with since the mid-1970s has one... I believe he bought it new as he has had it since I have known him...it is one of his favorite shooters. Last month when we shot he had it out at the range with a bunch of .45 ACP.
Mackay Sagebrush has one of the new mid-frame stainless .45 Colt/.45 ACP guns that he put an aluminum gripframe on...it is one of his favorite packin' guns.

Hmmmm… I’ve got one in each barrel length. My shortie was very tight and I opened it up to .4525. Tightened groups with lead bullets tremendously. The long barrel was spot on and has been a great shooter from day one! I put a a spare XR3 grip frame I had on the 4 5/8” gun. Definitely qualifies as a PPP! Dan |

I just picked up a Om 45 a few weeks ago and love it. Now I'm thinking of having my NM used for a custom build.

I have seen some of these guns have excellent throats,, and others need reaming to a uniform size. Just check the throats with a pin gauge & go from there.
