I need a small favor from a member that owns a FA83 in 45 colt or 454 Casull, Im thinking they will be the same. I need to know the cylinder length over the chamber area please. Not over the ratchet or gas ring.
Ive been toying with the idea of buying a FA83 in 45colt for a while now. But I want to use my favorite heavy cast bullet, the MP Ruger ONLY bullet. That bullet loaded in a Starline 45colt case the OAL is 1.725”

Steve, you'd have plenty of room in that FA83...

Thanks Huey, thats GREAT news! I know this is a little vague and a personal perception.....but how similar does the recoil feel using the same load in. Ruger Bisley vs. a FA 83 in 45colt with heavy load, Ruger level load?

Recoil feels very similar with the same load in an FA83 or Ruger Bisley. To me, the standard ruger grip TO ME applies more FELT recoil to my hand and wrist with the same load. The Bisley grip, or the Freedom grip both feel milder. A 4 degree grip frame, like the Bearskinner Bisley from RW Gripframes, helps out even more. On the big boomers, it FEELS like you are shooting a lighter load, just by using a different grip frame. Your opinions may differ

I HAVE SEVERAL FA 454's WITH XTRA 45 COLT CYLINDERS. I BELIEVE THE EXTERNAL DIMENSIONS ARE IDENTICAL, HOWEVER, WHILE THE 454 CYLINDERS HAVE TIGHT CHAMBERS THE 45 COLTS DO NOT. NOTWITHSTANDING THE LOOSER CHAMBERS, FOR MANY YEARS, ON MANY HUNTS, AND ON 7-8 SAFARIS, I EXCLUSIVLY USED THE 45 COLT CYLINDERS WITH 45 COLT WINCHESTER BRASS, LOADED TO 454 LEVELS. LATER I WENT TO 454 BRASS FOR CONVENIENCE FOR 454 EQUIVALENT HANDLOADS.

lefty: DO NOT KNOW, NEVER REALLY CHECKED. I ONLY USED NEW BRASS FOR MY HUNTING LOADS. YOU COULD NOT RESIZE THE BRASS TO MAKE IT FIT IN MY TIGHT CHAMBERED LINEBAUGH REDHAWK 45 COLT CONVERSION NOR SOME TIGHT CUSTOM CHAMBERED 45 COLT JRH RUGERS.
WAY BACK IN THE 1990's I ASKED FA TO CHAMBER THE 45 COLT CYLINDER TIGHT, THEY SAID NO, MAYBE NOW THEY MIGHT, DON'T KNOW, MIGHT BE WORTH A CALL TO BOB BAKER AT FA TO CHECK???
IF FA STILL WON'T DO A TIGHT RECHAMBER THESE MAY BE ALTERNATIVES: 1) GET FA TO FIT A 45 ACP CYLINDER AND THEN HAVE JRH RECHAMBER IT TO TIGHT 45 COLT SPECS, 2) FIND A 44 MAG CYLINDER (ASSUMING THEY ARE THE SAME LENGTH AS A 454 CYLINDER) AND HAVE JRH FIT IT AND RECHAMBER TIGHT TO 45 COLT, 3) HAVE FA FIT AN XTRA 454 CYLINDER FOR 45 COLT USE ONLY, and 4) JUST USE YOUR 454 CYLINDER BUT CLEAN THE HECK OUT OF IT BEFORE SHOOTING 454 IN IT.

For me the FA 83 FELT recoil is better than the Bisley Ruger.
