The original grips on my 44 Mag Alaskan are very comfortable but just look out of place on it. I took some early SRH grips and added some spalted maple burl inserts from Chig's Grips. Also added a Bowen sight. Looks much better! Before: After:

Curiously enough, head-shooting squirrels with a .44 is also called ‘the Alaskan facelift’.

Tried something similar with my .480 Alaskan. One shot with full power load and back to the Hogue Tamers (just my experience). Paul

The 480 Ruger flattens the Hogue Tamers all the way to the steel grip and doesn't provide much by way of cushion. The 454 Casull Alaskan by comparison, is almost pleasant to shoot with those grips on.

I can't shoot the factory grips on my Super Red in 480, they just eat my thumb up. They can be made pretty, but are NOT FOR ME.
