One of the best parts of having my oldest son and his wife here for part of their year sabbatical from the A/F is getting to spend time with him in the woods. He loves to hunt and last year he got his biggest buck down in NM while Ashly got her first elk. Great to see but kind of bittersweet to not be there for the hunt. So far this year we have been out multiple times for both turkey and deer and that included yesterday morning when we hunted both on the farm up the road where we run our cows. That flock of 30 plus turkeys started the morning by teasing us to no end. I was able to get them to come to within about 15 yards of where Rem was set up but they had about another 5' to go before they would be in his shooting lane when a car came cruising up the nearby road and blew the set up.
As we turned to take the shotgun back and go rattle for bucks a deer jumped out of the woods and ran up over the hill so I swung out in the trees to see if I could move it out to where Rem could get a look at it. Once up the hill he was able to locate the deer and it turned out to be a young button buck so he let it walk. We went on to the other side of the farm and tried to rattle in another buck but no luck so we headed back to the house and spent the middle of the day working on a furniture project in the shop.
Renay and I attend a couples bible study on Wednesday evenings so Rem decided to head back to the farm that evening and do a little still hunting on his own. We are just about to the place where we were going to meet when the phone goes off and would you know it, he had shot a nice little forked horn buck right at sunset! Hot dog/argh!!!! He got his buck but I wasn't there! After he got a little help from my mom to hold a leg etc. while he gutted it by head lamp we was able to get it to the land owners shop where we picked it up once we got home from our meeting. WE got it back home and I used the orange Kubota hoist to hang the guy in the shop and we were able to finish getting the insides cleaned up. Rem thought he had hit it too far back but the blown up heart proved him wrong. He wasn't carrying his Ralston knife I gave him but he did use my musk ox gripped knife from Kim to finish the clean up and that is what is on the heart in the picture.
This morning it is back to try for the turkeys then get ready to skin the tenderoni then greet a friend of his who has never hunted but is coning down to have us take him out this evening and tomorrow morning.
