Just like MLK ! Well, not really. It's too close to hunting season to start up with a new load. But while at work last night the idea of using IMR 4227 in my 480's with the 385gr HP popped into my head. You know how those things go, couldn't get it out ! I've played with Unique and Longshot and settled on A2400 at last. But then last night... In my sleep, Sixshot appeared in my dream ! We were on our way to the basement and my handloading gear when my Dad came down the hall, he's been gone 15 plus years now, and it threw me for a loop, even in my dream. I woke up after introducing them. We never made it to the basement to load ! Grrr ! Sooo, I have enough data compiled now that I believe I can find a couple sources around here somewhere, but thought I'd ask here on the forum too. Anyone here using IMR4227 with heavy bullets ? Wanna share ? Am guessing Sixshot has mentioned using IMR4227 with the 480. His moose thumping load..hmmnn..

Yeah, have HS-6 but have used it very little. Think that data and the IMR4227 is on the sheet I printed out that Tank posted here ! Thanks, but my interest is in trying a slower powder.

So, Tank didn't play with 4227 that day. Did find Hodgden H4227 data and some from Brian Pearce using IMR4227. I can work with this. I should wait until after hunting season though. The HS-6 data showed 14.5 grs but I remember folks here saying 14.0grs..

As a rule, I'd be leery of load data that comes to you in a dream ! A disclaimer kinda thing right here. To quote R.R., "Trust, but verify" My conscious is clear. Dick, you missed out on a good breakfast. You'd like it here, an in-law suite downstairs opens onto the patio that is the shooitng line for a range, all overlooking the Grand River below.

I'm thinking it'd be wise to add that to my collection.

His article that i'm referring to is in the Lyman Pistol/Revolver manual. Need details ? A pic sent ? That data does not use the 385gr cast HP though.,

Bula, sorry I missed out on breakfast, that's not like me!! My moose load with my Ruger SRH was a 370 gr cast slug from a Ballisticast mold that I special ordered, one side made a 370 gr & the other side made a 350 gr slug. I used the 370 & 20 grs of 4227 to take that moose with one offhand shot at 45 yds. Complete penetration and down in 40-45 yds. Not a max load, but it shot the best. Don't recall the velocity but it seems like just a bit over 1000 fps from the 7.5" barrel of the SRH. And the bullet was a softnose cast, this was before powder coating had came along. Bull was down in 5-6 seconds. I still have some of those loads. Good buddy Doc Barranti has the mold.

Forgot, my Dentist buddy used my Alan Harton 480 & the 385 gr HP to take a much bigger bull moose with, I think 4227, might have been HS6 & also one shot in & out. His bull was a dandy! Only animal he ever shot with a hand gun & the only time he ever pulled the trigger on my Harton gun! I only let him practice with my 44, I knew he would flinch if I let him practice with the 480. I'm sneaky but it worked perfectly.
