Wife ,son and I went to the new deer lease tonight to help son hang stand and show her around. Had on bug spray but still got 30 or more tiny, tiny ticks off her, and my legs. Small or smaller than the period ending this sentence. With a good magnifier most were the lone star tick as they had the white mark on there back. Hunting seasons are right around the corner, so lets be careful out there.

Thank You. I try and throw up a reminder now and then, here, and amongst my friends and camp mates.

cmillard Yes they do. From my understanding the lone star tick is the main carrier of Lyme's disease in this area. The interweb says it is the Black legged or deer tick that carries it. I don't like either one on me. When I turkey hunt I buy cheap panty hose to wear, plus permethrins spray for my clothes and that have been very effective, as ticks can't pass thru the mesh of the hose. Peel them off inside out and burn when finished hunting, cheap insurance at a dollar a pair and effective. Only had on 40% Deet last night and that wasn't enough. Next time full measures will be employed. For a while there was a product called Rihno skin marketed for tick protection that was a top and bottom of a tight fitting mech fabric like panty hose but I don't see it any more on the market. The hose has the benefit of feet in them so you are covered from toes to waist, and they are $1 a pair at Dollar Tree stores so cheap enough to dispose of after use. Just peel off inside out and burn.

I ALWAYS HAVE A SPRAY CONTAINER NEARBY FILLED WITH A MIX OF WATER AND PERMETHIN, ALWAYS! IF YOU ARE GOING AFIELD SPRAY YOUR FOOTWEAR AND PANTS LEGS, AND IF YOU ARE GOING TO PUSH BRUSH (WALK THRU THICKETS) WEAR LONG SLEEVES AND SPRAY YOUR SHIRT OR JACKET AND GLOVES AND HAT DOWN TOO.

Dont think I have ever had a tick on my flesh, even after 8 trips to Africa, at least have never had one that needed removal. I guess Lyme is very uncommon here in WA but not unheard of either. Some years ago my son came home with a tick on his back, been out in the woods messing around. We got it out of him and kept an eye on it, but it healed with no issues.

A few years ago I under went "field surgery", to get an imbedded tick outta the back of my shoulder blade. A camp mate and a 4" very sharp Rapala filet knife were involved. No issues since. More care taken since.
