Mrs likes to watch Mountain Men... last recorded show had a feral Bovine hunt... guy had bad luck getting meat for the winter, & got dropped off by an airplane on a island that had a population of feral Bovines ( apparently no hunting season, but they are wild, & no one lives there, so you can just go there & shoot them??? guy saw a group, & when working his way there, came on what looked like a big Herford bull, & dropped it... can't hardly believe that you can just go to this island & shoot cows for free??? ... & if so, that there is any there left to shoot... maybe more made for tv drama & left out much info??? anyone familiar with what I'm talking about??? a little searching on the www turns up stories like this... www.juneauempire.com/news/funding-remains-cut-off-for-removing-alaska-feral-cattle/but not seen anything about hunting them yet???

I've heard there are some islands in the Aleutian chain that have cows on them. Would be crazy expensive to just get there. Maybe not if you knew a guy with a plane. But chartering one adds up pretty darn quick. Weather there is a bit of an issue too. No ideas on the legality of shooting them.

I saw that episode too. One of the other from Alaska shows has the Kilchners going to an island where a homesteader, now gone, has left behind cattle too.

There are feral (wild cattle) on the Aleutian chain. The 7 years that I lived in Alaska from 84 tp 90 one could hunt them anytime they desired. Alaska wanted them gone and several attempts at rounding them up and removing them failed, for a number of reasons.

A friend of mine watches that a lot. When I get to his house on Thursdays at 7 it's usually on. They play VERY dramatic music when someone opens a can of pickles. Don't think I could sit through an episode.

Valsetz was a company logging town up in the coast range about 35 miles from home. I had family that lived in the company housing and worked in the mill. A guy had a herd of cattle he kept out on the flats before you got into town. When three timber company shut the mill they removed everything. Mill, equipment, houses, board sidewalks and the two lane lane bowling alley. What they couldn’t remove were the guys that had gotten loose and were living like wild elk. Gif years you could get a permit at the timber office to go shoot one, if you could find them. Not sure if there any left or not these days.

Opening pickle jars can be dangerous. My wife always calls for back-up. Sometimes I have to use one of them rubber grippy pads !

My Grandfather was manager at the veneer plant in Valsetz. My Dad graduated from the high school there. I think it was a class of about 17 in 1948. My Dad also has a car at the bottom of the mill pond, now covered over with dirt. They had a history exhibition of Valsetz and other small Oregon "ghost" towns at Oregon Archives building in 2019.
