Any j-frame gun, or a round butt k frame S&W.
My wife likes the little 431 in 32 H&R mag.

Ruger SP 101. Smaller grip, even with the longer barrels available.

My wife gravitated to the LCR’s, and absconded with two of mine

LCR is a sweet gun. I have the .22, a .38, and the .327 fed mag. They are easy to shoot.

SP101 is nice for recoil management and the stud grip frame means versatile grip options.
She can find a grip she likes for the SP101, but no guarantee she’ll like the weight or trigger.

An older S&W J Frame. Depending on how much she'll shoot it would be the deciding factor on whether or not it would be a lightweight. In a perfect world I'd get her an aluminum frame for carry and a steel frame for shooting. The only change I would make would be to find a set of "boot grips" for it.
Lord knows I love any Ruger BH/Single Six but I don't own any Ruger DA's as there are still S&W revolvers available on earth.

My ex is in love with a 640 Ladysmith I bought her. She's less than 5' tall and really tiny handed.

You can NOT pick a handgun that will fit another person's hands. Especially a lady. SHE will have to try different guns, AND their grips. And do not forget aftermarket grips. We have been teaching ladies clinics for almost 20 years. We have (4) Ruger SP-101's,, ALL with different grips to let them pick which one fits them the best.
And always remember, the lighter the handgun, the heavier the recoil, while the heavier the handgun, the lighter the recoil. Letting them shoot identical guns, with different grips makes a big difference too.
Always ask the question; "Will you carry a lot & shoot little,, or shoot a lot & carry a little,, or shoot a lot & carry a lot?" That helps determine the size of the handgun. Ruger & S&W are the places to start. But the only person who can pick a gun is the actual shooter.
Go to gun shops, gun shows, gun clubs etc & any place she can place hands on different feeling guns.

Amen. The XD9 I bought the wife is looong gone. She has a J-frame and a SP101 now. Frustrated Middle Child, from the Rugerforum would likely be the expert source for this topic. She is about 1.5 hrs SSW of me. Yet we've not met.

I do suggest if she does go with a j frame that you get both a steel frame and a lightweight. Do most of the shooting in steel, but carry the light. Also look to the lighter bullet weights. My ol lady handles 110gr +p in her ladysmith fine, but doesn't like even 158gr upper end standards I load. I don't even like my 180gr standard pressure load in her gun.The 180 +p is worse than 158 357mag in the sp101.

My ex wife had a steel j frame, and I didn't like the 158 grain LSWHP +P Winchester and Federal loads. Hurt my hand like the dickens. I didn't even want to try those loads in a lightweight j-frame.

Amanda is an excellent source. We've been friend a long time. Great lady. And she'll back up what I mentioned.

A Smith 642 is hard to beat. No hammer to snag, very light and simplicity. But like said above, guide the choice but let her choose. My wife likes her Ruger 380 LCP for carry. But she loves my Les Baer 45 for target. 😎
