I've been looking for one of these for a while. A S&W 586 chambered in 38 special. I've been on a bit of a 38 special kick for the last few years. My latest and perhaps last Bowen was chambered in it and I have a gun down with Clements that will also be a 38 special. I've also had pre and post war outdoorsmen in 38 along with a M&P target. I picked up the 14-6 in 38 this past fall and have found it to be wonderfully accurate. It's the gun wearing the Keith Brown stocks in the picture. The 586 was a bit harder to come by, in fact I didn't even know such a thing existed until a year ago when I lost out on two at auction. It's one of a couple hundred that were overruns for a Brazilian contract. I bought this one on a BIN on gunbroker as a 24 year old NIB gun. These are the last 5 shots at 25 yards today. It seems like a keeper. I'll have to see if I can find a set of KB ropers for it.

In my humble opinion, a simply fantastic revolver. I am happy for you and a little green with envy. LOL.

From what I hear the 586 in 357 is a shooter also. Beautiful examples of Smith's handiwork. At this point in time I have fallen in love with an old flame. The 38 Special in various forms, all lovable. Great cartridge with many platforms to enjoy it with.

Mine is a 586-4 that was made 1997. A few years earlier they made a batch of 586-5s. Not sure why they got there engineering change numbers mixed up. They were produced in 2.5, 4 and 6 inch variations with all having the hammer mounting firing pin and the later group having a MIM trigger. I think it's generally accepted that there was a few hundred total made in 38 special.
The S&Ws from the late 80s to the mid 90s are my favorite shooters as they generally have good dimensions and tolerances. This would have been around the same time period they were working on the endurance packages for the 44 magnums and producing 45 colts with good chamber dimensions. It just seems like they were sweating the details.

Back when Smith still had personnel who could spot a poperly assembled Smith, from just another product. Gunsmiths were still working at Smith then.
