Years ago when I first started working out and Squattin this poem was hanging on the wall next to the Squat Rack. I found it online a couple years ago. Any of you Lifters out there can relate I'm sure! Down the road, in a gym far away A young man was heard to say, "No matter what I do, my legs won't grow!" He tried leg extensions, leg curls, leg presses too. Trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he'd do! From the corner of the gym where the big guys train, Through a cloud of chalk and the midst of pain, Where the big iron rides high, and threatin' lives, Where the noise is made with big forty-fives, A deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees, A very big man with legs like trees, Laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack, Chalked his hands and monstrous back, Said, "Boy, stop lying and don't say you've forgotten! Trouble with you is you ain't been SQUATIN'!!"

Like I have shared before, the toughest lesson after an orthopedic repair is the one that says "you are repaired, but NOT restored!" Realizing the new normal after each procedure can alleviate future repairs. So says he with 4 shoulder/arm rebuilds!

Hey Robb, any of those shoulder replacements? I have had my left shoulder replaced - going on 5 years with it. Not sure it will last another 15...

SORRY GUYS FOR USING A "P" WORD IN A NOW DELETED POST, DID NOT SEE THE MODERATOR MESSAGE UNTIL 18 HOURS LATER AND BY THEN MY POST WAS DELETED. IN GENERAL I HAD LAMENTED THE PASSING OF MY HEAVY WEIGHTLIFTING DAYS (I AM 76 NOW AND ARTHRITIS AND INJURY HAVE TAKEN THEIR TOLL), FEELING LIKE A SISSY AT THE GYM KNOWING THAT THE GUYS AT THE GYM THAT COULD HAVE OUTLIFTED ME BACK IN THE DAY WERE RARE, BUT COMMENTING THAT I COULD STILL HANDLE A 3lb TRIGGER PULL, MANHANDLE A 50lb CORN BAG AND DO RANCH CHORES.

Don't think I did much you might call power lifting except for the railroad tie retainer walls I used to build. Pinned together with re-bar driven in with a sledge. Washing, lifting in and out of acid wash tanks, 30-60 lb tubes of quartz glass. Now play with 400-500 lb barrels of silica powder. Thru my 20-30's I lived in 3 lb ankle wieghts, biked 100 miles per week and ran 40 miles per week. For backpacking, mountaineering, climbing. It was about legs and lungs. Think I was in good shape until 45 or so. Then the overtime, rotating shifts and my wife's cooking started to catch up to me. Arthritus in the feet now.. I should'a sprung for the extended warranty.

LOL. I used to be on my 1stSargent's 10 mile team. As long as I made my runs, I never missed a pass. Now I am way too old and way too fat to run. Besides, I never ran FROM a gunfight, nor did I ever run INTO one. I see no point in running now. Besides, I didn't get this fat by being lazy; I WORKED AT IT! LOL!

Kraig, no total replacement yet except for a left hip. The rest were slap tear repairs, rotator work, impingement, turn tendon and pulled the bicep off the anchor point on the forearm. The last one has taken the worse toll on my lifting ability. I tripped on a root on a bear trail on ygr Yakutat river and landed against an alder tree with the left shoulder about 3 years ago and tore most of the repair work on that shoulder loose. My buddy the ortho doc said there was nothing left to tue the repairs to so just learn to live with a half useful arm and the pain. That was when the CBD became so useful.

"REPAIRED BUT NOT RESTORED" AND MAYBE PAIN FREE BUT MORE LIMITED THAN BEFORE, HARD LESSONS TO LEARN OF AFTER MY LEFT KNEE REPLACEMENT.

I may not move as heavy of weights as I use to 20 years ago but I still hit the iron. I've do more mobility and endurance now. A 70# kettlebell is a beast to snatch but on a good day ... Medicine ball slams are fun too. Have y'all tried a safety squat bar. That allows me to still squat without knee pain.

45man - you used the "p" word? was that "praise," "proud" or what i wonder...
the hall monitors were on you like sharks on chum weren't they?
i was told once i needed to "get some thicker skin" - funny, when i was trading shots with t72s - i don't remember seeing any hall monitors on the front line..
LOL!!
and yeah - squats are a polarizing topic in the gym aren't they?

This is my second Hoist contraption that I've had a love hate relationship with for the past 10 years since I retired from my full time traveling job. Stayed at the Hilton Hotels which had some decent work out equipment. Never really tried to bulk up just stay in tune and hit a routine every other day which in the past few years sometimes turns into every third day. Some weeks I just say to hell with it and go on a hike or two. I'll be 72 in May and I truly think that working out over the years has made a tremendous difference in my life. So far so good, no meds or heath issues but I could drop over dead tomorrow.

I hadn’t lifted since I was 27 and broke a shoulder breaking a colt. I’m sitting at the gym right now between sets. Been back at it since June 2019. My son was 14 at the time and I was going through divorce. He’s 15 yo 142lbs now and trying to hit 1000 before he turns 16 in September. Bp 235, dl 405 and squatting 315. Super proud of these crazy weights he’s doing. His world revolves around the gym. Keep telling him to take it easy, its only numbers but what does dad know. LOL. Only redeeming thing is some of the older guys here remember me from 20+ years ago and they tell my son how I lifted back then. I enjoy lifting again but I’ve learned I don’t heal back quite as quickly as I used to. It’s still some quality time I get to spend with him and my 18 yo daughter is training for her first mini triathlon. I’m running a little with her now. 51 and not t quite as in my prime as I used to be....
