IN A "GRATEFUL" THREAD, HERE IN THE LOUNGE, flyingzebra AND OTHERS COMMENTED ON THEIR BOUTS WITH THE GOUT. YEARS BACK, PROBABLY IN THE EARLY PART OF THE 21st CENTURY, I STARTED GETTING THE GOUT, AND HAD SOME RATHER SERIOUS BOUTS WITH THE GOUT. I STARTED TAKING ALLOPURINOL, BUT WAS CONCERNED ABOUT ITS SIDE EFFECTS, ESPECIALLY WITH THE LIVER. THEN 2 GOOD FRIENDS (GUS GILLESPIE, FROM UP ANCHORAGE WAY, AND DON KIRN, RIP, FORMER SCI PRESIDENT) WERE AT MY RANCH AND THEY RECOMMENDED I DROP THE ALLOPURINOL AND START TAKING 2 HERBS, BURDOCK ROOT AND YUCCA. I GET THESE HERBS FROM PURITAN'S PRIDE. THE BURDOCK ROOT COMES IN 450mg CAPSULES AND THE YUCCA IN 500mg CAPSULES.
I TAKE 1 OF EACH IN THE MORNING AND 1 OF EACH IN THE EVENING, AND LEAD A PRETTY NORMAL FOOD AND BEVERAGE LIFE. I AVOID SOME OF THE WORST OFFENDERS SUCH AS ORGAN MEATS AND SARDINES, AND GO EASY ON THE FREQUENCY OF BEEF, BUT I EAT GOOD, BIG STEAKS, FAJITAS, HAMBURGERS, AND OTHER BEEF AND VENISON PRODUCTS SEVERAL TIMES A MONTH, PLUS I DRINK COLD BEER (3-4 AT A TIME SEVERAL TIMES A MONTH) WHEN UP AT THE RANCH OR AT THE DEER LEASE AND ALSO SMOKE CIGARS WHEN AT THE RANCH AND THE DEER LEASE.
ONCE IN A RARE WHILE I WILL START TO GET THAT GOUT FEELING IN MY BIG TOE (USUALLY ON MY RIGHT FOOT) SO I START TAKING 1 OF EACH WITH A GLASS OF WATER HOURLY AND THE PEES THAT FOLLOW ELIMINATE THE URIC ACID AND I AVOID A SERIOUS BOUT OF THE GOUT. ALSO, WHILE I AM TAKING THE CAPSULES HOURLY I REGULARLY APPLY ARNICA (AN ANTI-INFLAMATORY) TO THE AFFECTED AREA.
HOPE THIS MAY BE OF HELP TO SOME OF YOU.

Sounds like a plan that works for you,.....I’ve heard it is very painful and wouldn’t wish it upon anyone, well maybe one or two. I think I’ll bookmark this for future reference.

I stopped drinking and the gout stopped.
Long ago...
Mine was in my ankle.
A sheet over my foot would cause such pain I couldn't stand it.
Nasty condition.

Same here. Gave up the beer and the gout stopped. I had it pretty bad for a while.

I feel for you brother just got over a 2 week span of it myself in my big toes . Sheet touching it was worse than when I broke all my toes at once.

If I eat very much pork it will get me. I got a long report off line quite a few years ago that listed lots of different foods that can add to the cause. One that comes to mind is cauliflower so I avoid it. The allopurinol worked okay but knocked my white blood count down some. Just yesterday the Dr. took me off the allopurinol for a while to check and see if it was what caused the low white blood count. Don’t ever want it again!

Black Cherry Extract has helped me the few times I’ve had it. Quit drinking 7 years ago and haven’t had a flair up.

It's funny the sheet thing rings SO true with many of us. Those who haven't had it probably think "HWHAA?" It's indescribably painful.

Big ripe cherries, fresh ones, from the grocery store will pretty well stop it within a few days. About two or three pounds of them. BTDT a few times over the years.

Ceiling fan blowing on it was as bad as the sheet! Cherry stuff never worked for me. I tried fresh, dried, extract even some pill form. A good friend swears by black cherries so it does work for some. The way the doc explained it to me some people’s body makes too much uric acid and some people’s body doesn’t get rid of the normal level. Maybe that’s the kicker? I was told my level was normal but my body didn’t expel it. Who knows?
