Thinking of getting a 500jrh in the bfr. How would the 500jrh do with thin skin animals like whitetail or black bear. Would it be over kill or not?

There is no such thing as too dead.
However, if you use proper bullets for the medium game it will prove to be a great performer. By proper, I mean get some expansion, especially for medium game. My first medium game with my 500Max, I chose a bullet better suited for Bison or Moose, and i was not impressed. However the fault was in bullet choice not caliber choice.

I have shot everything with mine. It’s overkill but that’s what makes it fun! This prairie dog wasn’t a big bull with its winter hide or I would’ve needed more gun.

been meaning to try out some Trailboss in the 500 JRH... going back & forth on that one, as I have a custom 5 shot 50 A.E. Super Blackhawk... thinking I may keep the JRH warm, & soften up the A.E. a little more with the Trailboss
but suspect with a little playing with components you could find a couple loads that shoot pretty close to the same point of aim, but I honestly wouldn't have any issues shooting deer with my normal JRH load... which is pretty warm

My FA 555, 50ae has impressed me as to the capability of the round. I used to think of it as a gussied up 44 mag, it performs on par with a 480 Ruger as long as you keep bullet length relatively short due to the short case. I’m going to have a 500JRH cylinder made for it but the 50ae handles everything just fine for hunting.

I was one of the 1st to have a 50 AE, I bought my Automag as soon as they came out... have a custom lever action, that started out as a 44 Magnum... conversion turned it from a pussy cat, to a beast... we had to specially glass bed the fore arm to keep it from rattling loose in short order after the conversion... so the 50 AE is no pop gun I'd almost call this unethical advertising... what "man" would not want one of these, after seeing this add...

That is a good add! I have ran some trail boss with the jrh. Easy to shoot with the heavy gun. Good trigger time. And would still zip through a deer

I've used 500 WE's , which are identical performance twins to the 500JRH, on groundhogs, up through hogs and whitetails, and up to several bull bison. Bullet weights of 325, 350 and 370 gr. Works fine on everything.

What's the story on the 500 JRH prairie dog grenade? Is it a Production model or a Precision Shop version or a JRH modified one? Grips, barrel length etc.?

I built the grips. Barrel was cut back to 5” from the cylinder face. Came as a 7.5 or 8 however you would measure it.
