Can anyone here advise me regarding Trail Boss and loads for a 300 Grain WFN lead bullet in the 45 Colt for a FA 97 4 1/2 inch. I am looking for a clean med to mild load in the 800 to 900 fps range. I can only find loads like this using Unique, but I was hoping to try Trail Boss.
One other question. Does anyone here use Trail Boss for light loads in the 45-70 with lead loads? If so would you mind sharing the particulars?

Groo here Contact the manufacture - that 300gr bullet is a mite heavy... I use cast bullets at standard to lighter weights 41/210 44/200 45/250 Most of my loadings are max if used in magnums wit mag primers and heavy crimp. Leaver action shooters had some trailboss data for 45-70.

Hodgdon's online reloading data center has 45-70 loads using Trail Boss and 300gr thru 485gr cast bullets. data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp+1 on Groo's suggestion to contact Hodgdon for .45 Colt, 300gr data. Paul

IN ANY STRAIGHT-WALLED CASE IT MAY BE LOADED TO THE BASE OF THE BULLET WITHOUT COMPRESSION OR AS LIGHT AS 70% OF THAT LOADING. YOU CANNOT GET THE LOAD YOU WANT WITH TRAIL BOSS.

I suggest you give Titegroup a try. It has become my go to powder for my lighter loads in about every caliber I shoot including those in my 475's and 500 L.

John, Thank you for the answer. I read this just minutes after I finished my call to Hogdon. If I did not know better I would believe it was you on the phone as their suggestion and comments were word for word what you wrote.
boxhead,
I will look at TiteGroup as a solution. Can you share with me what you like about Titegroup as opposed to other powders like Unique, H-110, Lil Gun etc.

Unique is for standard to semi-heavy loads; H110 for full house loads; avoid L'il Gun as it seems to be eating forcing cones at least in Freedom Arms sixguns. TiteGroup is excellent for standard loads.
