Since I deal with significant hearing loss I wear behind the ear hearing aids every day. I just wish there was some sort of hybrid system that combines high impulse protection from hunting gun fire yet still allow sound amplification. I guess need to check with a few companies like that mentioned in the article and ask them about some options. I just don't see me walking around with Walker Game Ear style muffs on in the field.

At the tender age of 15,, I bought my first ear plugs,, BECAUSE of the ringing in my ears & the advice of a friendly gun owner. I was always trying to use muffs or plugs in the Army anytime I was around my helicopters. I have tried to protect my hearing as much as possible,, but I too suffer from some hearing loss. I always use protection on the range. And often,, in my hunting blind,, if I have an opportunity to shoot a deer,, AND have the time & all to put on my ear muffs,, I do so. Muffs do not interfere with handgun hunting,,,! But,, the type of hearing protection, combined with the sound enhancement,, AND being able to shut down with gunfire is a tall order to fit everyone. Not always easy.

My hearing damage done years ago. I did sometimes wear muffs. My Mom got them from an employee of United Airlines, a ground crew member many years ago. They were not carried afield though. My SBH, friends M29's and a 357 BH did their damage. Ohhh I hated that 357 ! But protection worn more and more over the years. But too late as tinnitus my constant companion now. A loud work environment too. Plugs or muffs worn there too, and yet damaged hearing. I'll ask you younger guys to TRY HARDER ! Keep a new clean package of plugs in your pocket, car console, each pistol rug, everywhere ! I've had now 2 sets of E-muffs ruined in the rain. The fit in your ear E-buds have controls too small for my clumsy hands to work. But keep trying please.

It is especially important to get and keep little ones protected. It is especially difficult to know when they have the plugs in correctly and well, the muffs seated and snug. Don't just hand them out.

A 2010 STUDY BY THE VA SHOWED THAT VETERANS HAVE A 30% OR BETTER CHANCE OF SEVERE HEARING LOSS THAN NON-VETS. BACK WHEN I WAS IN THE ARMY (1966-1970) WE DID ALL OUR SHOOTING AND TRAINING WITHOUT ANY HEARING PROTECTION. I HAVE NON-VET CONTEMPORARIES WHO HAVE LED SIMILAR HUNTING AND SPORTS SHOOTING LIFESTYLES TO ME THAT CAN HEAR MANY TIMES BETTER THAN I CAN. I AM ALMOST DEAF IN MY LEFT EAR AND NOT AS BAD IN MY RIGHT EAR. DRIVE UP ORDERING AT FAST FOOD PLACES IS TUFF WITH HARDLY ANY HEARING IN THE LEFT EAR. SEVERE HEARING LOSS SUCKS, PLUS IT GETS THE MRS. ALL WORKED UP. HEARING AIDS HELP, BUT NOT MUCH SO I HARDLY EVER USE THEM. WALKER's GAME EARS REALLY HELP ME HEAR SOUNDS IN THE WOODS I DID NOT KNOW EXISTED.
RE THE VA STUDY, I FOUND OUT ABOUT IT via GOOGLING.

I've got hearing loss & tinnitus from rock concerts & 20 years in the Army. I wear ear plugs to mow the yard, run the leaf blower, even ride my motorcycle. I never shoot without ear-pro & discovered e-muffs several years ago. The inexpensive Howard Leight, to be specific. They amplify so well that I have to dial the volume way back to not hear every leaf crashing down through the canopy or squirrels lumbering through the brush. A wild turkey, legging it through the woods like its life depended on it, sounds like a runaway train barreling through a pine thicket.
They'll also teach you to walk & move much more quietly through the woods.

Tinnitus is a constant companion. Hammers, jackhammers and saws will ruin your hearing just as quickly as shooting will. Would rather leave the binoculars in the truck than my e- muffs .Wear them so much hunting have driven halfway home after a day in the woods with them still perched on the side of my head. Don't leave home without them guys, your hearing NEVER gets better ,only worse!
