Does this hurt the cylinder? I see that FA's does not reccomend it. It seems you could use longer bullets in the FA's 475.

It doesn't hurt the cylinder any more than the age-old practice of shooting .38 specials in a .357. You just need to clean it well when you are done.

FWIW FA runs tighter chamber specs than the rest of the industry. Build up a little residue in front of the 480 case in the 475 chamber then chamber a full power 475 cartridge. When the cartridge is fired the residue buildup prevents the crimp from opening as it should. Means a minor SNAFU in another gun can be a major pressure jump in the FA...

So, keep the chambers clean...

I think if you check with Freedom Arms, they will tell you it is not a good idea. I do not recall the particulars, but Bob Baker has explained the reason quite well in the past on other forums. It has to do with the tight tolerances and possible erosion in front of the shorter cartridge. I seem to recall it is especially not recommended with 45 colt in a 454 cylinder. I think you are much better off just using 475 brass and reducing the loads. Also Buffalo Bore offers a great reduced power load for the 475. I use them a lot and they are extremely accurate, at least out of my FA 475.

My custom .475 has really tight chambers as well, but you can safely fire .480s in it. You just need to clean it well afterwards.
