How do u tell if powder is to old to use or if it has gone bad. I have a pound of imr 4831 that has never been opened that is in a bright orange metal can and nearly a pound of h322 that is in a plastic can . But I know I have had them at least 17 years before I moved . The h322 has some used out of it from when I loaded 45/70 before . Now I have started loading again is it safe to use. Also I opened the powder and there is no smell to the old h322 but the new can I open has the same smell as all rest of powder but it has a greenish coler to it. Is that right never seen a different coler powder.

Deteriorating powder may turn yellow, clump, break down, or get dusty, conditions which mean it’s over the hill. Deteriorated powder generally is less potent. Good enough to makes a line drawing and burn under safe conditions but not good for loading ammo. Storage conditions are much more important than age. David Bradshaw

It's been stored in a cabinet or box in my basement away from sun and alot of heat . It still has the white seal on top of it but I can not say for sure it was air tight on the h322 but the imr in metal can has never been open. And I found out the older powder they used more carbon so it was blackish grey and the new h322 has less carbon and a greenish tint to it.
