Hi folks, I tend to go to El Paso saddlery for my holsters when I have a revolver that needs new leather. In this case I have a flattop 44 special bisley, however most companies in their drop down list the options as “Blackhawk” and the length of barrel. Understandably most are probably considering the standard protective ‘eared’ frame of a Blackhawk and not the revived flattop versions. But just how different are they in terms of size and fitment in what would be a standard leather Blackhawk holster? Any off the shelf (Bianchi/Galco/etc) that you have had good luck with fitting the flattops? Or is the difference marginal? I had a DAO Galco holster for my 500 mag years ago and it was a pretty solid choice but it would be nice to see what the folks here have to say as you can tell I don’t have a standard larger frame Blackhawk..... not yet atleast Thanks! Simply Rugged and Mike Barranti both offer holsters for the mid-frame flattop Blackhawks. And FWIW, El Paso Saddlery currently specifies that they have a 6-month (24 week) backlog.

Call Mike(Doc) Barranti and ask him if he might have something from his "Direct Line" available first, before searching elsewhere. It has worked for me several times.

Wouldn’t the older model Vaquero holster fit the flattops ? I thought they were the same frame. I wouldn’t think the sight “ears” would be that big a deal but all mine have sights so I’m not sure about that.

If by older model Vaquero you mean the original, large frame Vaquero, they are larger overall than the New Vaquero and the NM Flattop in 44 Special. The New Vaquero, the New Model 44 Special Blackhawk and the original OM 357 Blackhawk, flat top and “eared”, share what is referred to as the mid frame receiver. Similar in size to an original Colt SAA. I would imagine a holster sized for a Colt would fit. The original Vaquero and the 44 Magnum Blackhawks, both Flattop and “eared”, share the large frame receiver Tim

The Single Action Army sized holsters work perfect for mid frame Rugers in my experience. And I have a El Paso saddlery for my 4 5/8” 44sp but it isn’t as nice of a holster as my Barranti leather holster for my 5 1/2” Bisley and a way below my Kieth full carved Barranti holster for my #5 that are all on the same frame size. If you go to Barranti’s website he has midframed Rugers as a standard size, that of course is the mid frame Flat Tops and Vaqueros. Something like their Hank Sloan can be had in a couple of weeks built the way you want it unless you want a fully carved holster, then be prepared to wait a while. But they are worth it. barrantileather.com/shop

Bianchi Lawman for 4 5/8” Ruger worked fine for my FT Bisley. I did have to stretch the strap to get over the Bisley frame though.

Just looked at Barranti direct line on Doc’s web site. With your gun I would order a Hank Sloan made for a medium frame Ruger BH. One of the best rigs I own for carrying a SA revolver comfortably and securely on a pants belt. Several years later mine is as solid as when new. In my experience the Direct Line holsters get here quick.
