I have been a member of this forum for over 15 years, even before it was on ProBoards. From the start I have been mesmerized by the customs on this site and wanted one for my own. When I was introduced to the #5 gripfame, I absolutely had to have one of my own and the quest began.
However with three little ones to keep fed, all three of them in braces at the same time etc there just was not enough cash to have a big name smith build one for me. So I had to do as I have done for most other things in my life, if I wanted something I had to build it myself.
In May 2010 our very own kings6 listed a #5 grip frame in this site for sale. I couldn't get the message off to him fast enough and managed to beat-out the others. This was the first of many transactions between us; in June of 2010 he contacted me about an OM Bisley hammer and then in Dec of 2010 I managed to talk him out of an OM Super grooved trigger.
Now I needed a gun to put all of this stuff on. In Oct 2011 I managed to find an OM Flattop 44 Mag that was a beater and got a decent deal. Now I was ready to get this thing started!
My build plans:
45 Colt because I am a 45 guy
6" octagon barrel because they look classy on a sixgun
long ejector rod and housing to get the cases all the way out
Custom TLA #5 front sight because I liked the way they look
A #5 base pin latch to stay true to the #5 design.
Blackpower chamfer on the cylinder
#5 style base pin from Belt Mtn
Nice wood for the stocks, walnut or maple
A rust Blue job in Brown
Super BH Grooved trigger
OM Bisley Hammer
Along the way I inherited a mill and lathe so I was able to do all of the machine work myself. I am sure my father in law was looking down on me laughing his butt off watching all of my trials a tribulations on my quest. I even made the stocks from a board of maple burl I got from an uncle and even stabilized them myself because I wanted to know how. I painstakingly applied 18 coats of bluing on it over a week's time.
It was a long nearly 10 year quest, here are the results:
Now, it was time to focus on getting some leather to carry this piece around in the wood as I plan on hunting with it. I am a rather traditional guy and I knew that only one shuck would do. I found a George Lawrence 120 basket weave holster and matching ranger cartridge belt on GunBroker. I was born and raised and still live within 40 miles of Portland Oregon where these were made. It all just seemed right, I hope you agree that it was the right choice.
Well now it is time to build its little brother; a .257 Jackrabbit on an OM Single Six in the same style as this one. Most of the parts have been procured, now to find the time to make it all happen.
