After being given that 21' long solid maple suffle board table top I was looking in to what kind of project to make with the various sections. The sections are right at 7' long, 3" thick and 20" wide of 1/2" hard maple laminations. After doing some looking around I decided to build a split top Roubo woodworking bench with an end vice as well as a wooden leg vice from Benchcrafted Industries. The table is not as wide as I want the finished product to be so I took a very dark old growth fir board that I salvaged from an old tannery that was here in town. The fir board is dark brown almost black colored with age but still solid as the day it was installed in the tannery so I decided to use a 2" wide piece of this as the edge board on each half of the split top. The legs and rails are laminated up from 80+ year old fir beams I was able to salvage from a church remodel here in town.
I have the legs glued up cut out and the tenons cut but now I need to do the mortises for the rails and the leg vice mechanism. That part is on hold until I get the top all laminated up to get the final width dimensions so I know where to cut the mortises in the bottom of the bench. I'll post pictures as I get further along but you can google and image of a Roubo Woodworking Bench to see what it will look similar to. My understandign si Roubo was a well known woodworker/craftsman from France several centuries ago so it will be fun to build a new project based on a historical design.
