Being "retired" has allowed me more opportunity to spend time in my woodshop, especially with both pump trucks gone. While my Jet cyclone dust collection system works great when atttached to the various saws and the planer, it does nothing when using a small palm/finish sander. I had heard and read about Festools and their attached vacuum system and after doing a bunch of hand sanding on some furniture pieces yesterday I finally went down to the local supply yard and looked at these tools. Granted, they are not cheap but everyone who has stepped up to the pump and bought one, especially with the attached HEPA vacuum system that even starts and stops when the sander is turned on say they only wish they had made the investment earlier. I now know what they mean. I have never had a sander that works so well and leaves literally no dust in the air or on the piece I'm sanding on! I can see more of these German made tools in my future! I only wish I would have had them back when I was dong finish carpentry for a living! If you do wood working I suggest you take a look at these tools.

I remember going from hand sanding to a belt sander (which has no real place in a wood shop) to random orbital to using planes and cabinet scrapers. I can live with scraping then 220 in a ROS.
The #1 thing everyone hates is sanding. We spend more time using sanders compared to all these other tools that cost way more.
It's like buying a cheap 22 because it's "only a 22" when in reality our 22 should be one of the best guns you own.
Spend more on that sander, eliminate the part of the hobby everyone hates (tumbling and sorting brass anyone?).
Congrats on the Festool. By all accounts they're the best of the best.

It has been a LONG time since I have been this surprised and excited about a tool in the shop. Often it is tough to see much difference between brands when you look at tools like finish nailers, miter saws etc so when you find something that truly is head and shoulders above what you have been using it is a real game changer.

The Festools are great, also in that class are the Fein and Merka sander/vac systems. At work we have Fein, they get abused but still last 10 or 12 years before they need to be replaced.
